OATEY 22017 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can Oatey 22017 95/5 solder be used on potable water copper lines?
Yes. The 22017 is a lead-free 95% tin / 5% antimony alloy that meets the requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act, so it is used on potable water piping. It also complies with California and Vermont lead content regulations, which matters if you are working in either state.
2) What torch and temperature do I need to melt 95/5 wire solder?
The alloy melts between 450 and 464 degrees F, a narrow range typical of 95/5. That is hotter than 50/50 tin-lead, so a propane torch works on small diameter copper but MAPP gas gives you a faster, cleaner joint on 1 inch and larger lines where the copper pulls heat away.
3) Is 95/5 solder OK for refrigeration and chilled water lines, or do I need brazing alloy?
Oatey's 95/5 wire solder is commonly used on refrigeration lines and cooling equipment as well as potable water. It is a soldering alloy, not a brazing rod, so it is for sweat joints on copper tube, not high-pressure or high-temperature service that calls for a silver brazing alloy.
4) What is the difference between 95/5 solder and lead-free solder with silver or bismuth in it?
The 22017 gets its lead-free status from a 95% tin, 5% antimony alloy rather than a silver or bismuth addition. All of them are acceptable on potable water under the Safe Drinking Water Act; 95/5 is the traditional plumber's choice and runs a 450 to 464 degree F melting range. Antimony alloys are also the ones commonly specified on refrigeration and cooling work.
5) How much solder is on a 1 lb roll of Oatey 22017 and does it go bad in the truck?
One pound of wire per roll, and it has unlimited shelf life. Stock it on the truck or the shelf as long as you like; unlike flux, the alloy does not degrade. Part number 22017.
