OATEY 20015 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use Oatey 50/50 wire solder on copper drinking water lines?
No. The Oatey 20015 50/50 wire solder is a lead-bearing alloy, 50% tin and 50% lead, and it is not for use on drinking water lines. Potable water joints need a lead-free solder. Keep this one for non-potable work: drainage, waste and vent copper, HVAC condensate, and general sheet metal and electrical tinning.
2) Is Oatey 20015 solder legal to buy in Indiana or Pennsylvania?
No. The 20015 50/50 wire solder cannot be sold or used in Indiana or Pennsylvania. If your job or your warehouse is in either state, this is the wrong part to put on the order.
3) What temperature does Oatey 50/50 solder melt at?
The 50/50 alloy has a melting range of 361 to 421 degrees F. That range matters on the torch: it starts to move at 361 and is fully liquid by 421, so there is a plastic window in between where the joint can be disturbed. Hold the fitting still until it cools past 361.
4) What is the difference between 50/50 and 40/60 solder?
Tin content and melt behavior. The 50/50 alloy is 50% tin, 50% lead and flows between 361 and 421 degrees F. The 40/60 alloy is 40% tin, 60% lead with a wider range of 361 to 460 degrees F. The higher-tin 50/50 goes liquid sooner and has a shorter pasty range, which is why it is the usual pick for plumbing joints; the wider range on 40/60 is easier to work with when you want the solder to stay pasty for wiping. The 20015 is the 50/50.
5) Does Oatey 20015 wire solder have flux in the core, or do I need to buy flux separately?
It is solid wire solder, not an acid-core or rosin-core product, so you flux the joint yourself. Order a tinning or petroleum-base plumbing flux alongside it and brush the cleaned copper and the fitting socket before you heat.
6) How much solder is in an Oatey 20015 roll?
One pound of solid wire solder per roll. That is the standard MRO shelf quantity, enough to carry a service tech through a day of small DWV repairs without restocking.
