Panduit PISR2-1 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Panduit PISR splicer/reducer be used to land an aluminum feeder onto copper branch wire?
Yes. The Pan-Lug PISR in-line splicer/reducer is dual rated AL9CU, so copper and aluminum conductors can be landed in the same connector. The body is aluminum with a tin-plated finish at the conductor interface, which is what allows the copper-to-aluminum transition without a dissimilar metal problem at the contact point.
2) What wire sizes does the PISR connector take, and which version do I order for a #2 feeder?
Two wire ranges are offered. PISR1/0-1 covers 1/0 stranded down to #14 solid, and PISR2-1 covers #2 stranded down to #14 solid. For a #2 feeder, PISR2-1 is the one sized to it; order PISR1/0-1 if the largest conductor in the splice is 1/0. Because each range runs down to #14, the same connector handles the reduced side of the splice.
3) Is the Panduit PISR rated for 600V, 90C conductors like THHN?
600V maximum, with UL and CSA temperature ratings of 90C. That covers 90C-rated building wire such as THHN in a 600V distribution system. It is UL Listed and CSA Certified at 600V.
4) Does the PISR splicer come insulated, or do I still need to tape or boot the splice?
It ships with blue PVC insulation over the connector body, so the splice point has dielectric cover built in. No separate cover kit is part of the assembly.
5) What tool do I need to tighten a Panduit PISR connector?
The set screws are hex drive, so an Allen key or hex bit driver is what lands the conductors. Torque to the value marked on the connector.
6) Is the Panduit PISR connector made in the USA and ARRA compliant for a federal job?
Country of origin is the United States and the PISR is flagged ARRA compliant, which is what a government or federally funded project spec typically asks for on Buy American grounds. It is also RoHS compliant.
7) Should I use an in-line splicer/reducer like the PISR or a multi-tap distribution block?
An in-line splicer/reducer is the right call when you are joining two conductors end to end and stepping down size, for example a 1/0 feeder reducing to a smaller branch conductor in a panelboard or switchgear pull box. A power distribution block is what you want instead when one line conductor has to feed several loads at a common bus. The PISR is built for the straight splice and reduction case, insulated in blue PVC and rated 600V, 90C.
8) Are PISR connectors sold individually or only by the box?
Sold as single pieces. Minimum order is 1 piece and standard package quantity is 1, so you can buy exactly the count the job needs instead of a carton.
