1) Will the Paxton10 keypad reader work with our existing HID Prox and MiFare cards, or do we have to reissue credentials?
Existing tokens keep working. The Paxton10 keypad reader is multi-format and reads Paxton, EM4100/02, Sony FeliCa Lite-S, MiFare Classic, MiFare DESFire EV1/EV2, MiFare Plus, MiFare Ultralight and Ultralight C, MiFare Mini, NFC, Hitag2 and HID Prox 125kHz, all concurrently. That covers both RFID bands it runs, 125kHz and 13.56MHz, so a site running a mix of old HID Prox fobs and newer MiFare cards can move to Paxton10 without a re-badge. Add PIN codes on the same door from the 12 key pad, and Bluetooth at 2.4GHz for phone credentials through the Paxton app.
2) Can I mount a Paxton10 keypad reader in a US single-gang backbox?
Surface mount only, and in the US that means a backbox adaptor to sit it over a standard box. The reader body measures 2-33/64 inches wide by 4-3/32 inches high by 23/32 inches deep, so it stands proud of the wall rather than sinking into it. It is a simple 2-part construction, the back plate goes to the wall and the reader clips on, so plan the cable entry behind the base.
3) How far can the Paxton10 keypad reader be run from the door controller?
Up to 100m (328ft) of cable between controller and reader. The reader ships with 5m (16ft) of encapsulated cable already attached, so anything past that is an extension you splice and pull. Cable is 22AWG, 4 core twisted pair, and the wiring is a simple 4 wire connection on RS485 using the Paxton10 protocol. Match the 22AWG twisted pair when you extend, and keep the total run inside 100m or the RS485 data link is the thing that suffers first.
4) Can a Paxton10 keypad reader be mounted outdoors on an exterior door or gate?
Yes, it is built for outside. IP67 sealed against dust and water, IK09 impact rated against a struck or kicked housing, and an operating range of -31F to +150F covers a northern winter and a sun-baked south-facing entry alike. The keypad itself is hardened silicone rather than membrane, and the housing is PC+ABS in black. For gate and parking entries that is the combination that matters: sealed, impact rated, and readable in the dark through the LED backlighting.
5) Can I use this keypad reader on a Net2 system or another brand's access control panel?
No. Its data connection is RS485 running the Paxton10 protocol, so it talks to Paxton10 controllers and nothing else. It is not a Wiegand or OSDP output reader, which means it will not drop onto a third party panel or an older Paxton platform expecting a different protocol. If the site is on another controller, the reader has to match that system.
6) What power supply do I need to size for Paxton10 keypad readers, and how many can I run per PSU?
Each keypad reader runs on 12V and draws 40mA quiescent, 100mA maximum, with power consumption capped at 1W. Size on the 100mA figure per reader when you total a multi-door job, and remember the reader's draw is separate from the strike or maglock on the same opening, which is usually the far bigger load. The built-in wake-up mechanism drops it into low power sleep between presentations, which is why the resting draw is well under half the peak.
7) Should I put a keypad reader or a plain prox reader on the door?
Go keypad where you need a code as well as a credential. This one gives you three ways in on one device: PIN on the 12 key pad, a card or fob across the 125kHz and 13.56MHz bands, or a phone over Bluetooth. That earns its place on a shared back door, a contractor entry, or anywhere you want card-plus-PIN on a higher security opening. A card-only reader is the simpler choice on interior doors within a badge-controlled perimeter where nobody needs a code and there is no reason to give people something else to forget. Same wiring either way, 4 wire on RS485.
8) Do Paxton10 readers work with mobile phone credentials, or do I still have to hand out fobs?
Phones work. Bluetooth Smart and Bluetooth Low Energy are built in at 2.4GHz, so credentials go to a phone or a wearable through the Paxton app, including long range and hands free presentation. Useful for property managers who cycle tenants or contractors on and off a building and do not want to chase down physical fobs at move-out. Cards and fobs still read the same on the same unit, so a mixed population of app users and badge holders is fine.
9) Is the Paxton10 keypad reader UL listed for access control?
