Frequently Asked Questions

When should I use the 4200V instead of the 4200R?
The 4200V latches at the top and bottom of the door with surface mounted vertical rods, which suits a pair of doors without a mullion. The 4200R is a rim device with no rods that latches at the edge of the door.

Can the 4200 Series be dogged open?
Hex key dogging is standard, but it is not available on fire listed (F) versions of the device.

What door widths fit the 4200 Series?
The device is standard for 3' doors and can be cut down to a 27" minimum. A version for doors up to 4' is available on the 4200R and 4200V.

PDQ 4200RF689 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the PDQ 4200RF fit a door already prepped for a 161 cutout?
Yes. The 4200RF rim exit device uses a 2-3/4 inch backset and is compatible with a 161 prep, which is the standard cylindrical door prep on most commercial hollow metal and wood doors. It is built for 1-3/4 inch thick doors.
2) Can the PDQ 4200RF be dogged open for daytime free access?
No. Hex key dogging is standard on the non-fire 4200 devices, but it is not available on fire listed (F) models, and the 4200RF is a fire rated device. Fire exit hardware has to latch every time the door closes. If you need dogging, you need the non-fire version of the 4200 rim device on an opening with no fire rating.
3) What is the minimum stile width for the PDQ 4200RF wide stile exit device?
The device alone needs a minimum 4-1/4 inch stile as an exit only application. With outside trim the minimum goes up and depends on which trim you choose. On an aluminum storefront door with a narrow 1-3/4 to 2 inch stile this wide stile device will not fit; that opening needs a narrow stile device.
4) Is the PDQ 4200RF fire rated, and what size opening does the rating cover?
The 4200RF is UL listed Fire Exit Hardware for up to 1-1/2 hours. For the rim device the rating covers a single door up to 3'0" x 7'0". It is also UL 305 listed for panic, so it serves both panic and fire exit duty.
5) Should I use the 4200R rim device or the 4200V surface vertical rod on a pair of doors?
On a pair without a center mullion, use the 4200V. It latches at the head and the threshold with top and bottom Pullman latches, so it does not need anything in the middle of the opening to latch into. The 4200R is a rim device that latches at the edge of the door into a strike, which means a single door or a pair with a mullion. On fire rated pairs the SVR is listed up to a 6'0" x 7'0" opening.
6) What door widths does the PDQ 4200RF cover, and what if my door is wider than 3 feet?
Standard is a 3'0" (36 inch) door, and the rail can be cut down to a 27 inch minimum. For wider doors, the A version covers openings up to 4'. On the vertical rod model, rods are stocked for 7' doors with rod extensions available for doors up to 10'.
7) Do I need to worry about handing when ordering the PDQ 4200RF?
No. The 4200RF is non-handed, so one device covers left and right hand openings. That is useful for a property manager stocking spares across a building.
8) Will the 4200RF latch bolt engage my existing rim strike?
The rim model uses a stainless steel deadlocking latch bolt with a 3/4 inch throw. That is the standard rim exit throw, so it engages a conventional surface mounted rim strike. The SVR version instead uses Pullman latches with 5/8 inch throw at top and bottom.
9) What fasteners come with the PDQ 4200RF, and do I need sex nuts for a fire door?
Machine screws and wood screws are included, and sex nuts are supplied with every fire listed device, so the 4200RF ships with the through-bolt hardware a fire rated opening requires. Mounting it on a wood fire door with the supplied sex nuts is part of the listing.
10) Does the PDQ 4200RF meet ADA requirements for a school or hospital exit?
The 4200 Series complies with ADA and ICC/ANSI A117.1, carries ANSI/BHMA Type 1 function, and is TAA compliant for government work. Chassis is corrosion resistant plated steel with metal end caps and chassis cover, no plastic parts, with a heavy gauge steel or stainless rail.
11) What finishes is the PDQ 4200RF available in for matching other doors in a building?
Six finishes: 626 satin chrome, 630 satin stainless steel, 689 aluminum, 693 black, 695 duro bronze and 696 gold. Order codes read 4200RF plus the finish number, so satin chrome is 4200RF626 and black is 4200RF693.
