Frequently Asked Questions

When should I use the 4200V instead of the 4200R?
The 4200V latches at the top and bottom of the door with surface mounted vertical rods, which suits a pair of doors without a mullion. The 4200R is a rim device with no rods that latches at the edge of the door.

Can the 4200 Series be dogged open?
Hex key dogging is standard, but it is not available on fire listed (F) versions of the device.

What door widths fit the 4200 Series?
The device is standard for 3' doors and can be cut down to a 27" minimum. A version for doors up to 4' is available on the 4200R and 4200V.

PDQ 4200R689 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the PDQ 4200R rim exit device fit my existing 161 prep door?
Yes. The 4200R is built to a 2-3/4 inch backset and is compatible with a 161 prep, so it drops onto a standard hollow metal door already prepped for a cylindrical lock or rim device. Door thickness is 1-3/4 inches standard, and the device is non-handed, so you do not need to specify left or right hand.
2) What is the minimum stile width for the PDQ 4200 exit device?
The device needs a minimum 4-1/4 inch stile as an exit only application. With trim, the required stile varies by the trim type you choose. If your aluminum storefront door has a narrower stile than 4-1/4 inches, the 4200 is the wrong family, you need a narrow stile device instead.
3) Should I use the 4200R rim device or the 4200V surface vertical rod on a pair of doors?
On a pair of doors without a center mullion, use the 4200V. It latches at the top and bottom of the door with Pullman latches, so it does not need a strike at the door edge. The 4200R is a rim device with a single latch bolt at the edge of the door, which suits a single door or a pair with a mullion.
4) Can I hold the PDQ 4200R latch retracted during business hours?
Hex key dogging is standard on non-fire 4200 devices, so you can hold the pushbar down and the latch retracted for push-pull operation during the day. Dogging is not available on the fire listed (F) versions, that is a code requirement for fire exit hardware, not a product limitation.
5) Is the PDQ 4200R approved for a fire rated opening?
The 4200 Series is UL 305 listed for panic, and the fire rated (F) models are UL listed as Fire Exit Hardware for up to 1-1/2 hours. You have to order the F model for a fire door, the standard device is panic only. All fire listed devices ship with sex nuts for through bolting.
6) What do I order for a 4 foot wide door versus a 3 foot door?
The standard 4200R covers 3 foot doors and can be cut down to a 27 inch minimum. For doors up to 4 feet you order the A size, which shows as 4200RA plus the finish code, for example 4200RA626 in satin chrome. Both widths are offered in all six finishes.
7) Will the PDQ 4200R latch into my existing rim strike?
The rim model uses a 3/4 inch throw stainless steel deadlocking latch bolt, which is the standard throw for a surface mounted rim strike. Check that your existing strike is a rim exit strike rather than a mortise or cylindrical lock strike, the 4200R will not engage a lock face strike.
8) Does the PDQ 4200 vertical rod version work on an 8 foot or 10 foot tall door?
Stock vertical rods cover 7 foot doors. For taller openings up to 10 feet you add rod extensions, PDQ parts 429021 and 429023. Order the extension with the device so the rods reach the head and threshold.
9) Does the PDQ 4200R meet ADA and accessibility requirements for a school or hospital exit?
The 4200 Series complies with ADA and ICC/ANSI A117.1, is ANSI/BHMA Type 1 function, and is TAA compliant for government purchasing. It is a commercial grade device intended for schools, hospitals, and commercial buildings.
10) What mounting hardware comes with the PDQ 4200R, and will it mount to a wood door?
Both machine screws and wood screws are included, so the device mounts to hollow metal or wood doors out of the box. Fire listed versions also come with sex nuts for through bolting, which is what fire doors normally require.
11) What finishes does the PDQ 4200R come in, and which one matches my existing hardware?
Six finishes: 626 satin chrome, 630 satin stainless steel, 689 aluminum, 693 black, 695 duro bronze, and 696 gold. For standardizing across a building, 630 satin stainless is the usual match for stainless pulls and push plates, and 689 aluminum matches painted aluminum storefront. The finish code appends to the model, so 4200R630 is the satin stainless 3 foot device.
12) How durable is the PDQ 4200R for a high traffic exit?
The chassis is corrosion resistant plated steel with a heavy gauge steel or stainless steel rail, and the end caps and chassis cover are metal, with no plastic parts. That matters on school and hospital exits where plastic end caps are the first thing to break off.
13) What is the latch throw on the 4200V surface vertical rod version?
Both Pullman latches throw 5/8 inch. The top latch deadlatches; the bottom latch is held retracted during the door swing so it does not drag on the threshold. If your floor or threshold condition will not take a bottom latch, that is the usual reason to spec a rim device or a less bottom rod arrangement instead.
