Frequently Asked Questions

When should I use the 4200V instead of the 4200R?
The 4200V latches at the top and bottom of the door with surface mounted vertical rods, which suits a pair of doors without a mullion. The 4200R is a rim device with no rods that latches at the edge of the door.

Can the 4200 Series be dogged open?
Hex key dogging is standard, but it is not available on fire listed (F) versions of the device.

What door widths fit the 4200 Series?
The device is standard for 3' doors and can be cut down to a 27" minimum. A version for doors up to 4' is available on the 4200R and 4200V.

PDQ 4200V630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the PDQ 4200V work on a pair of doors with no center mullion?
Yes, that is what the 4200V is for. It latches at the head and the threshold using top and bottom Pullman latches, so a pair of doors can be secured without a center mullion. The top latch deadlatches with a 5/8 inch throw and the bottom Pullman also throws 5/8 inch and is held retracted while the door swings. If you have a single door in a frame, the 4200R rim device is the one to order instead.
2) What is the minimum door stile the PDQ 4200V needs?
4-1/4 inches minimum stile for the device itself, exit only. Add trim and the requirement changes depending on which trim you pick. If your aluminum storefront stile is narrower than 4-1/4 inches, this wide stile device will not fit and you need a narrow stile device.
3) Does the PDQ 4200V drop into an existing 161 door prep?
Yes. The 4200 Series runs a 2-3/4 inch backset that is compatible with a 161 prep, and it is built for 1-3/4 inch doors, the standard commercial thickness. Non-handed as well, so you do not specify hand when ordering.
4) Can the PDQ 4200V be used on a fire rated door pair?
Fire rated (F) versions of the 4200 Series are UL listed as Fire Exit Hardware for up to 1-1/2 hours. Two things change on the fire model: hex key dogging is not available, because a fire exit device cannot be held retracted, and sex nuts are supplied with all fire listed devices. Non-fire 4200 devices are UL 305 listed for panic and do include hex key dogging as standard.
5) Will the PDQ 4200V vertical rods reach on an 8 foot tall door?
Not as stocked. The vertical rods ship stock for 7 foot doors. For taller openings up to 10 feet, rod extensions are available (4200 parts 429021 and 429023), and those need to be ordered alongside the device.
6) Are mounting screws included with the PDQ 4200V, or do I need to buy them separately?
Both machine screws and wood screws come in the box, so the device covers hollow metal and wood door mounting without extra hardware. Fire listed versions also come with sex nuts for through-bolting. What is not included is trim, so if the opening needs outside pull or lever trim, that is a separate line on the order, and your trim choice also affects the stile width you need.
7) Is the PDQ 4200V ADA compliant for a school or hospital corridor?
The 4200 Series complies with ADA and ICC/ANSI A117.1, and it is an ANSI/BHMA Type 2 function device. It is also TAA compliant, which matters on government and institutional purchases. PDQ lists schools, hospitals and commercial buildings as the typical applications.
8) Can I hold the doors unlatched during business hours with the PDQ 4200V?
Yes on the non-fire version. Hex key dogging is standard, so you depress the push rail and dog it with a hex key to leave the latches retracted for free passage, then undog at close. Fire listed (F) devices cannot be dogged at all, which is the correct behavior for a fire exit opening.
9) What finishes does the PDQ 4200V surface vertical rod device come in?
Six: 626 satin chrome, 630 satin stainless steel, 689 aluminum, 693 black, 695 duro bronze and 696 gold. All six are offered in both the 3 foot and the 4 foot door width, so you can standardize one finish across a building and still cover wider leaves. Part numbers build off the finish code, for example 4200V630 or 4200VA693.
10) How durable is the PDQ 4200V in a high traffic entrance?
The chassis is corrosion resistant plated steel with a heavy gauge steel or stainless steel rail, and the end caps and chassis cover are metal, with no plastic parts anywhere in the device. On the rim model the latch bolt is stainless with a 3/4 inch throw; on the V version the Pullman latches are the working parts at the head and threshold.
