PDQ 6400VF Narrow Stile Surface Vertical Rod Exit Device, Fire Rated

Grade 1 Narrow Stile Surface Vertical Rod Exit Device

The PDQ 6400V is a Grade 1 surface vertical rod exit device for narrow stile doors, certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1. Its rods mount on the face of the door and engage a 3/4" stainless steel toggle latch at the top and a 5/8" travel drop bolt at the bottom, making it suited to narrow stile pairs without a center mullion, or wherever a narrow look is preferred.

A cast chassis, extruded aluminum rail and heavy-duty flush end cap give the device strength and pry resistance, while cushion springs quiet the push bar and a compression spring returns it after each press. The device and trim are non-handed. It is offered as a panic rated device and as a fire rated device (6400VF), in 24", 36" and 48" door widths, with a less bottom rod option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 6400V rated for fire door pairs?
Yes. The fire rated 6400VF is ETL listed to UL 10C and CAN/ULC-S104 for up to 3 hours, covering pairs up to 8' x 10' with top and bottom latches, or up to 8' x 8' less bottom rod. The panic model is ETL listed to UL 305.

Can delayed egress be used on a 6400V narrow stile door?
It depends on stile width. PDQ notes that the delayed egress option requires at least a 3-1/2" stile, wider than the 6400V's 3-1/8" minimum, so check the stile dimension before specifying it.

What is the difference between the 6400V and the 6400C?
Both fit narrow stile door pairs without a mullion. The 6400V's rods are visible on the face of the door, while the 6400C's rods run concealed inside it for a cleaner appearance.

PDQ 6400VF630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the PDQ 6400VF fit a narrow stile aluminum storefront door?
Yes, within limits. The 6400VF narrow stile surface vertical rod device needs a 3-1/8 inch minimum stile when used with the 639027/639057 strike, and it drops to a 2-1/8 inch minimum stile on aluminum frames using a blade stop strike. Door thickness has to be 1-3/4 to 2 inches. Backset is a true 2-3/4 inches.
2) Can I use a surface vertical rod exit device on a pair of doors with no center mullion?
That is exactly what the 6400VF is for. The rods run up and down the face of the door and latch into the frame head with a 3/4 inch stainless toggle latch and into the threshold with a 5/8 inch travel drop bolt, so the pair is secured without a center mullion. If you would rather have a mullion, a rim device is the alternative; if you want the same pair coverage with the rods hidden inside the door, the 6400C concealed vertical rod is the counterpart.
3) Is the PDQ 6400VF listed for fire rated door pairs, and what sizes does the rating cover?
The 6400VF is ETL listed as fire exit hardware to UL 10C for up to 3 hours, covering pairs (single or double egress) up to 8 feet by 10 feet with top and bottom latches, or up to 8 feet by 8 feet in the less bottom rod configuration. It is also ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1. If you only need panic hardware and no label, the non-fire 6400V is the version to order.
4) Does the 6400VF dog down so the door can stay push-open during business hours?
No. Dogging is not available on fire labeled devices, so the 6400VF cannot be held retracted. Hex key dogging is standard on the panic-rated 6400V (cylinder dogging optional), but not on a fire device or on any 24 inch device. For a fire pair you need hold-open to come from a listed door closer with a fusible or electromagnetic hold-open, not from the exit device.
5) What is the difference between Less Bottom Rod and Less Bottom Rod with Fire Pin on the 6400?
Top and Bottom Rods latches at both the head and the threshold. Less Bottom Rod (LBR) deletes the bottom rod and drop bolt, which is common where floor conditions, carpet or thresholds make a bottom latch impractical. On fire rated pairs the LBR-FP option adds a fire pin, and the LBR fire rating tops out at an 8 foot by 8 foot pair versus 8 by 10 with top and bottom latches.
6) Can I add delayed egress to a narrow stile 6400V device?
Only if the stile is wide enough. Delayed egress requires at least a 3-1/2 inch stile, which is wider than the 6400V's 3-1/8 inch minimum, so measure the actual stile first. It is also unavailable on 24 inch devices. Delayed egress carries a UL 294 listing on this series.
7) Do I have to specify handing when ordering a PDQ 6400 vertical rod device?
The device itself is non-handed, and trim is either non-handed or field reversible, so you can stock one device for left and right leaves. One exception: the Alarmed Exit option with latch bolt monitoring does require handing to be specified.
8) Can the 6400VF be ordered for a 9 or 10 foot tall door?
Door height is a required selection, with 7 foot (standard), 8 foot, 9 foot and 10 foot options. Panic applications go up to 10 feet tall. Note the fire rating on the 6400VF covers pairs up to 8 feet by 10 feet with top and bottom latches, so on a fire labeled opening the door height limit is driven by that listing rather than by the rod length offered.
9) How much does the push bar stick out from the door face?
Projection is 3-1/8 inches extended and 2-1/2 inches depressed, which is what you measure against in a tight vestibule, against a side-lite, or where the door swings past a wall return. Push bar length varies with the door: 16 inches on a 24 inch door, 18 inches on a 36 inch door, 24 inches on a 48 inch door. The narrow stile 6400 rail is 1-9/16 inches.
10) Can the 6400 device be cut down to fit an odd door width?
Yes, within published maximums. A 36 inch device cuts a maximum of 6 inches (8 inches on fire, and 8 inches on CVR cylinder dogging); a 48 inch device cuts a maximum of 12 inches (14 inches on fire). A 24 inch device cannot be cut at all. Electrified options tighten this: MLR allows 3 inches on a 3 foot device and 9 inches on a 4 foot, alarmed allows 2 inches and 8 inches, and delayed egress allows no cut on a 3 foot device and 6 inches on a 4 foot.
11) Does the PDQ 6400VF meet ADA push force requirements?
The device complies with ADA and ICC/ANSI A117.1. Where a facility needs a reduced operating force, the 5P accessibility option brings it to a 5 pound maximum push force and carries a CBC 11B-309.4 compliance statement, which matters on California jobs and in healthcare and school openings.
12) Is there an access control version of the 6400 vertical rod device for card reader entry?
Yes. Motorized latch retraction (MLR) electrically pulls the latches so a reader or push button can allow entry, and request to exit / touch bar monitoring (SS), latch bolt monitoring (LM), alarmed exit, ALHW hard wire power and relay, and ISMC Molex connectors are all available. None of the electrified options are offered on 24 inch devices, so plan the narrow leaf accordingly.
13) Is the PDQ 6400 approved for Florida windstorm openings?
The series carries Florida approval FL #40297 at +50/-50 psf on an 8080 18 gauge pair, and the WS Florida Windstorm option is specified when the opening requires it.
14) What fasteners come with the 6400 exit device, and do I need sex nuts and bolts?
Machine and wood screws are included. Sex nuts and bolts (SNB) are an option you add, and they are the usual call on hollow metal or wood doors in high-abuse or secure openings where a through-bolted mount is wanted. Tamper proof security head screws (SHS) are also available if the device is exposed to the public.
15) Will the PDQ 6400VF match the finishes on the rest of my storefront hardware?
Eight finishes are offered: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 622 flat black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 630 satin stainless steel and 630F full stainless steel. Each configuration gets its own part number, for example 6400VF605. One caveat for finish matching: the TLA head cover option is only made in 630.
