PDQ 6400C Narrow Stile Concealed Vertical Rod Exit Device, Panic Rated

Grade 1 Narrow Stile Concealed Vertical Rod Exit Device

The PDQ 6400C is a Grade 1 concealed vertical rod exit device for narrow stile doors, suited to narrow stile double door applications. Its top and bottom rods run inside the door instead of up the face, for a rod-free appearance and a narrow frame profile. It is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1.

A cast chassis and heavy-duty flush end caps add strength and resist prying, a cushion spring keeps the push bar quiet, and a compression spring returns the bar smoothly each time. The top latch is a 3/4" stainless steel toggle and the bottom is a 5/8" travel drop bolt. It is offered as a panic rated device and as a fire rated device (6400CF), in 24", 36" and 48" door widths.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose the 6400C over the 6400V on a narrow stile door pair?
Choose the 6400C when the project needs a rod-free appearance, since it hides the vertical rods inside the door. The surface mounted 6400V runs the rods visibly up the face. Both fit the same stile widths.

Is the 6400C fire rated?
The fire rated 6400CF is ETL listed to UL 10C for fire exit hardware up to 3 hours, covering door pairs up to 8' x 8' (single or double egress). The panic model is ETL listed to UL 305.

Does the 6400C support keyed dogging?
Yes. Hex key dogging is standard on panic devices, with cylinder dogging available so the device can be held retracted with a keyed cylinder instead of a hex key. Dogging is not available on fire labeled or 24" devices.

PDQ 6400C630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the PDQ 6400C fit a narrow stile aluminum storefront door?
Yes, within limits. The 6400C needs a 3-1/8 inch minimum stile when used with the 639027/639057 strike, and it drops to a 2-1/8 inch minimum stile on aluminum frames when the blade stop strike is used. Door thickness range is 1-3/4 to 2 inches. On aluminum doors the top and bottom latches mount through the inside door face rather than on L brackets, which is how steel and wood doors are handled.
2) Can the 6400C secure a pair of doors without a mullion?
Yes. As a concealed vertical rod device, the 6400C latches at the head and at the threshold rather than into a strike on the edge of the opening, so a pair of narrow stile doors can be secured without a center mullion. Top latching is a 3/4 inch stainless steel toggle and the bottom is a 5/8 inch travel drop bolt.
3) What do I need to specify when ordering a PDQ 6400C?
Four choices drive the part number: door width (24, 36 or 48 inch), finish, rod option (top and bottom rods or Less Bottom Rod), and dogging. Door height is also selected, with 7 foot standard and 8, 9 and 10 foot available. Dogging choices are hex key (standard), CD cylinder dogging, LD less dogging, or either style with an indicator. A finished part number looks like 6400C605.
4) Will the 6400C work on a 10 foot tall door?
On panic applications the 6400C is rated for doors up to 10 feet tall. The standard device is built for a 7 foot door, so taller openings are ordered by specifying the 8, 9 or 10 foot door height so the concealed rods come the right length. Fire rated 6400CF coverage stops at 8 feet by 8 feet pairs.
5) 6400C concealed vertical rod or 6400V surface vertical rod, which should I use?
Pick the 6400C when the opening has to look rod-free. Its top and bottom rods run inside the door leaf, giving a clean face and a narrow frame profile. The 6400V runs the rods up the outside of the door face, which is easier to get at for service but visible. Both fit the same stile widths, so the decision is appearance and whether the door can be prepped for internal rods.
6) Does the 6400C need to be ordered handed?
The device itself is non-handed, and trim is either non-handed or field reversible, so one device covers either leaf of a pair. The exception is the alarmed exit option, which does require you to specify handing on the order.
7) Can I cut a 36 inch 6400C device down for a narrower door?
Cut limits depend on width and options. A 36 inch device allows a 6 inch max cut (8 inches fire, or 8 inches on CVR with cylinder dogging), and a 48 inch device allows 12 inches (14 inches fire). The 24 inch device cannot be cut at all. Electrified versions cut less: MLR is 3 inches on a 3 foot device and 9 inches on a 4 foot, alarm is 2 inches and 8 inches, and delayed egress allows no cut on a 3 foot device and 6 inches on a 4 foot.
8) Why would I order the 6400C Less Bottom Rod version?
LBR drops the bottom drop bolt and its concealed rod, which is the usual call where floor conditions make a bottom latch a problem, such as carpet, uneven thresholds or heavy traffic that fouls a floor strike. With LBR the device latches at the top toggle only. If you need both points of latching, order the Top and Bottom Rods version with the cast top strike and plate bottom strike.
9) Is the PDQ 6400C heavy duty enough for a high traffic entrance?
It is a Grade 1 heavy duty commercial device certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1, which is the highest of the three grades for exit devices. Construction is a cast chassis with heavy duty flush end caps that resist prying, an extruded aluminum rail, a cushion spring to keep the push bar quiet and a compression spring for bar return.
10) Does the 6400C meet ADA push force requirements?
The 6400C complies with ADA and ICC/ANSI A117.1. If your project is held to the California reduced push force requirement, order the 5P accessibility option, which gives a 5 pound maximum push force and meets CBC 11B-309.4.
11) What electrified options can I get on the PDQ 6400C?
Available electrified configurations are motorized latch retraction (MLR), signal switch for request to exit and touch bar monitoring (SS), alarmed exit including the ALHW version with hard wire power and relay, latch bolt monitoring (LM), delayed egress, and ISMC industry standard Molex connectors which are added alongside another electrified option. Delayed egress is UL 294 listed. Remember cut lengths shrink on electrified devices, and alarmed exit has to be ordered handed.
12) How far does the 6400C push bar project from the door?
Projection is 3-1/8 inches extended and 2-1/2 inches depressed, which is what matters when you are checking clearance to a door pull, a frame return or an adjacent leaf. The narrow stile 6400 rail is 1-9/16 inches, and push bar length is 16 inches on a 24 inch door, 18 inches on a 36 inch door and 24 inches on a 48 inch door.
13) Can I hold the 6400C unlocked during business hours?
Yes on panic devices. Hex key dogging is standard, and CD cylinder dogging lets you hold the latches retracted with a keyed cylinder instead of a hex key, which is the better choice when you do not want a hex wrench floating around the building. Indicator versions (HEX-IND, CD-IND) show dogged status. Dogging is not offered on fire labeled devices or on the 24 inch device.
14) What finishes does the PDQ 6400C come in, and can I match existing hardware?
Eight finishes are offered: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 622 flat black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 630 satin stainless steel and 630F full stainless steel. 630 satin stainless is the usual match for commercial storefront and aluminum openings. Note the TLA head cover option is only made in 630.
15) Are mounting screws included with the 6400C, or do I need sex bolts?
Machine and wood screws ship with the device. Sex nuts and bolts (SNB) are an extra-cost option, which is what you want on a through-bolted application or where the push side is exposed to abuse. Tamper proof security head screws (SHS) can also be specified.
