PDQ 6400V Narrow Stile Surface Vertical Rod Exit Device, Panic Rated

Grade 1 Narrow Stile Surface Vertical Rod Exit Device

The PDQ 6400V is a Grade 1 surface vertical rod exit device for narrow stile doors, certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1. Its rods mount on the face of the door and engage a 3/4" stainless steel toggle latch at the top and a 5/8" travel drop bolt at the bottom, making it suited to narrow stile pairs without a center mullion, or wherever a narrow look is preferred.

A cast chassis, extruded aluminum rail and heavy-duty flush end cap give the device strength and pry resistance, while cushion springs quiet the push bar and a compression spring returns it after each press. The device and trim are non-handed. It is offered as a panic rated device and as a fire rated device (6400VF), in 24", 36" and 48" door widths, with a less bottom rod option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 6400V rated for fire door pairs?
Yes. The fire rated 6400VF is ETL listed to UL 10C and CAN/ULC-S104 for up to 3 hours, covering pairs up to 8' x 10' with top and bottom latches, or up to 8' x 8' less bottom rod. The panic model is ETL listed to UL 305.

Can delayed egress be used on a 6400V narrow stile door?
It depends on stile width. PDQ notes that the delayed egress option requires at least a 3-1/2" stile, wider than the 6400V's 3-1/8" minimum, so check the stile dimension before specifying it.

What is the difference between the 6400V and the 6400C?
Both fit narrow stile door pairs without a mullion. The 6400V's rods are visible on the face of the door, while the 6400C's rods run concealed inside it for a cleaner appearance.

PDQ 6400V630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the PDQ 6400V fit a narrow stile aluminum storefront door?
Yes, within limits. The 6400V needs a 3-1/8 inch minimum stile when used with the 639027/639057 strike, and it drops to a 2-1/8 inch minimum on aluminum frames with a blade stop strike. Door thickness range is 1-3/4 to 2 inches. Measure the stile face before ordering, because that number, not the door width, is what rules the device in or out.
2) Can the 6400V secure a pair of doors with no center mullion?
That is what it is built for. As a surface vertical rod device, the 6400V latches at the head with a 3/4 inch stainless steel toggle latch and at the floor with a 5/8 inch travel drop bolt, so each leaf locks top and bottom and no center mullion is needed. Rim devices on a pair do need a mullion to latch against.
3) 6400V surface vertical rod or 6400C concealed rod, which should I use?
Both handle narrow stile pairs without a mullion. The 6400V runs its rods on the face of the door, which makes installation and service straightforward and lets you retrofit an existing door without routing it. The 6400C hides the rods inside the door for a cleaner look, but the door has to be prepped for them. If appearance drives the job, go concealed; if you are working on existing storefront leaves, surface rod is the practical choice.
4) Is there a fire rated version of the PDQ 6400V for a labeled pair?
Yes, the fire rated model is the 6400VF, ETL listed to UL 10C and CAN/ULC-S104 for up to 3 hours. It covers pairs up to 8 feet by 10 feet with top and bottom latches, or up to 8 feet by 8 feet less bottom rod. The panic version is ETL listed to UL 305. Note that dogging is not available on fire labeled devices, since a fire exit device must latch on every cycle.
5) Will delayed egress work on my narrow stile door with the 6400V?
Often not. PDQ's delayed egress option requires a stile of at least 3-1/2 inches, which is wider than the 3-1/8 inch minimum the 6400V itself will accept. If your stile measures between 2-1/8 and 3-1/2 inches you can use the device but not the delayed egress option. Delayed egress is also unavailable on 24 inch devices, and that configuration is UL 294 listed.
6) Does the 6400V meet ADA push force requirements for a school or healthcare opening?
The 6400V complies with ADA and ICC/ANSI A117.1, and it is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1 for heavy traffic. Where a 5 pound maximum push force is required, order the 5P accessibility option, which is the configuration listed for CBC 11B-309.4.
7) Do I have to specify handing on a PDQ 6400V?
Not for the device itself. The 6400V is non-handed, and the trim is either non-handed or field reversible. One exception: if you add the Alarmed Exit option with latch bolt monitoring, handing has to be specified on that order.
8) When should I order the 6400V less bottom rod instead of top and bottom rods?
Less bottom rod (LBR) is the choice where a bottom rod and floor strike are a problem: carpet or uneven floors, high traffic that would beat up a drop bolt, or a threshold you do not want drilled. You give up the 5/8 inch travel drop bolt at the sill, so the leaf is held at the head only. On fire rated 6400VF applications, LBR limits the pair size to 8 feet by 8 feet versus 8 feet by 10 feet with both rods.
9) Can I hold the door in a push-pull state during business hours with the 6400V?
Yes on panic devices. Hex key dogging comes standard, with cylinder dogging (CD) optional, plus indicator versions (HEX-IND and CD-IND) if you want the dogged state visible. Dogging is not available on fire labeled devices or on the 24 inch device, so a 2'0" leaf cannot be dogged.
10) What do I order for a 9 or 10 foot tall narrow stile door?
Door height is a selection on the 6400V order, with 7 foot standard and 8, 9 and 10 foot choices for longer rods. Panic applications are covered up to 10 feet tall. Pick the height that matches the opening so the rods arrive the right length rather than being field-pieced.
11) How much does the 6400V push bar stick out from the door?
Projection is 3-1/8 inches extended and 2-1/2 inches depressed. That matters where the door swings into a tight vestibule or past a wall return. The narrow stile 6400 rail is 1-9/16 inches, and push bar length follows door width: 16 inches on a 24 inch door, 18 inches on a 36 inch, 24 inches on a 48 inch.
12) Can I cut a PDQ 6400V down for an odd door width?
Within published limits. A 36 inch device allows up to 6 inches of cut (8 inches on fire rated and on CVR cylinder dogging), and a 48 inch device allows up to 12 inches (14 inches fire rated). The 24 inch device cannot be cut at all. Electrified versions cut less: motorized latch retraction allows 3 inches on a 3 foot and 9 inches on a 4 foot device, alarm 2 inches and 8 inches, delayed egress no cut on a 3 foot and 6 inches on a 4 foot.
13) Which 6400V electrified option do I use for access control that keeps the door latched?
For an access control reader releasing the latch, specify MLR (motorized latch retraction), which pulls the latches back electrically. If you only need to know someone pushed the bar or exited, use SS (signal switch, request to exit and touch bar monitoring) or LM (latch bolt monitoring). ISMC adds industry standard Molex connectors on top of any of those. None of the electrified options are offered on the 24 inch device.
14) What fasteners come with the PDQ 6400V, and do I need sex bolts?
Machine and wood screws are included. Sex nuts and bolts (SNB) are an option and are what you want on a thin or hollow metal door, or anywhere you need through-bolting for pry resistance. For tamper resistance on an exposed exterior entrance, add SHS tamper proof security head screws.
15) Is the 6400V rated for a Florida windstorm pair?
Yes, with the WS Florida Windstorm option. The device carries FL #40297 at +50/-50 psf on an 8080 18 gauge pair. Specify WS when ordering for a hurricane zone opening so the device ships in that configuration.
16) Will the 6400V use a standard 2-3/4 inch backset prep?
Yes, the 6400V is a true 2-3/4 inch backset device, which is the standard commercial exit device backset. There are also no exposed screws on the back of the push bar, so the bar reads clean from the pull side.
17) Can I match the 6400V to the other exit devices in my building's finish?
Eight finishes are offered: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 622 flat black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 630 satin stainless steel and 630F full stainless steel. Satin stainless (630) is the common commercial match for storefront hardware. One restriction to note: the TLA head cover option is only made in 630.
