PDQ 6300V Wide Stile Surface Vertical Rod Exit Device, Panic Rated

Grade 1 Wide Stile Surface Vertical Rod Exit Device

The PDQ 6300V is a wide stile surface vertical rod exit device certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1. Rods run up the face of the door to a cast top strike and a plate bottom strike, which suits a pair of doors with no mullion between the leaves. A less bottom rod version is available.

The 6300V is ETL listed to UL 305 for panic, and the fire rated 6300VF is listed to UL 10C as Fire Exit Hardware for up to 3 hours. It is designed and assembled in Lancaster, PA, and carries a ten year limited warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do I need a surface vertical rod exit device instead of a rim device?
Use a surface vertical rod device like the 6300V on a pair of wide stile doors with no mullion between the leaves. Rods run up the face of each door to strikes at the head and, optionally, the floor, since there is no fixed center post for a rim latch to engage.

What is the difference between the 6300V and 6300C?
Both are wide stile vertical rod devices for pairs of doors without a mullion. The 6300V mounts its rods on the face of the door, while the 6300C conceals them inside the door.

What door sizes does the 6300V fit?
It comes in 24", 36" and 48" widths for doors 1-3/4" to 2" thick, up to 10' tall on panic applications, and needs a minimum 3-1/2" stile.

PDQ 6300V630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the PDQ 6300V work on a pair of doors with no mullion between them?
Yes, that is exactly what a surface vertical rod device is for. The 6300V runs rods up the face of each leaf to a cast top strike and a plate bottom strike, so each door latches at the head and the floor instead of into a center post. On a pair with a removable or fixed mullion you would use a rim device instead.
2) What door thickness and stile width does the PDQ 6300V need?
It fits doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch thick and needs a minimum 3-1/2 inch stile. That stile minimum is why it is called a wide stile device, so an aluminum storefront door with a narrower stile will not take it. The delayed egress option also requires the 3-1/2 inch or wider stile.
3) I have 8 foot tall doors. Do I need to order anything different on the PDQ 6300V?
Yes. The standard device is built for a 7 foot door, and door height is a required selection with 7, 8, 9 and 10 foot choices. Panic applications are covered up to 10 feet tall. Pick the actual leaf height when ordering so the rods come the right length.
4) Is the PDQ 6300V fire rated?
The 6300V itself is the panic version, ETL listed to UL 305. For a fire rated opening you need the 6300VF, which is listed to UL 10C as Fire Exit Hardware for up to 3 hours. Note that dogging is not available on fire labeled devices, so a fire door cannot have the bar held down.
5) What is the difference between Top and Bottom Rods and Less Bottom Rod on the 6300V?
With top and bottom rods you get the stainless steel 3/4 inch top toggle latch plus a bottom drop bolt with 5/8 inch travel into a floor strike. Less Bottom Rod (LBR) drops the bottom rod and bolt entirely, which is common where you do not want a floor strike, where carpet or an uneven threshold is in the way, or where a sweep and auto flush bolts handle the bottom. LBR secures only at the head.
6) My door is an odd width. Can the 6300V device be cut down to fit?
Yes, within limits. The 36 inch device can be cut up to 6 inches (8 inches on fire rated, and 8 inches with CVR cylinder dogging), and the 48 inch device up to 12 inches (14 inches fire rated). The 24 inch device cannot be cut. Electrified versions cut less: MLR allows 3 inches on a 3 foot device and 9 inches on a 4 foot, alarm allows 2 inches and 8 inches, and delayed egress allows no cut on a 3 foot device and 6 inches on a 4 foot.
7) What electrified options can I get on the PDQ 6300V for access control?
Motorized latch retraction (MLR) for electric dogging and card access, signal switch (SS) for request to exit and touch bar monitoring, latch bolt monitoring (LM), alarmed exit, alarmed exit with hard wire power and relay (ALHW), delayed egress, and ISMC Molex connectors added alongside another electrified option. Delayed egress versions are UL 294 listed. Watch the reduced max cut on the electrified builds if the door is a non-standard width.
8) Do I have to specify handing when ordering the PDQ 6300V exit device?
The device is non-handed, and the trim is either non-handed or field reversible, so you do not hand the basic order. One exception: if you add the Alarmed Exit option with latch bolt monitoring, handing has to be specified.
9) Can the PDQ 6300V be dogged down so the door stays push-open during business hours?
Hex key dogging comes standard. You can upgrade to CD cylinder dogging, or order either style with an indicator (CD-IND, HEX-IND), or specify LD for no dogging at all. Cylinder dogging is not offered on fire labeled devices or on the 24 inch device.
10) How far does the PDQ 6300V push bar stick out from the door face?
Projection is 3-1/8 inches extended and 2-1/2 inches depressed, so allow for about 5/8 inch of bar travel plus clearance for anything mounted nearby. The wide stile rail measures 2-13/16 inches with an 8-3/16 inch head.
11) Does the PDQ 6300V meet ADA push force requirements?
The 6300V complies with ADA and ICC/ANSI A117.1 as supplied, and it is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1. If your jurisdiction enforces the California 5 lb maximum push force, add the 5P accessibility option, which brings it under CBC 11B-309.4.
12) Is the PDQ 6300V approved for a Florida hurricane-zone opening?
Yes. It carries Florida approval FL #40297 at +50/-50 psf on an 8080 18ga pair. For windstorm applications specify the WS - Florida Windstorm option when ordering.
13) Should I pick the 6300V surface rod or the 6300C concealed rod version?
Both are wide stile devices for pairs without a mullion. The 6300V carries its rods on the face of the door, which makes it the retrofit-friendly choice since no door prep for concealed rods is needed. The 6300C hides the rods inside the door for a cleaner look, which generally means ordering the door prepped for it.
14) What mounting hardware comes with the PDQ 6300V, and what do I need for a thin metal door?
Machine screws and wood screws are included. On hollow metal doors where you want through-bolting for pull resistance, add the SNB sex nuts and bolts option. Tamper proof security head screws (SHS) are also available for exposed or high-abuse locations.
15) Is the PDQ 6300V exit device made in the USA for a federal or BAA project?
It is designed and assembled in Lancaster, PA, and PDQ lists it as BAA compliant as a COTS product made in the USA, which is what a government or federally funded job needs for the submittal.
16) Does the push bar length change with the door width on the 6300V?
It does. The push bar is 16 inches on the 24 inch door device, 18 inches on the 36 inch, and 24 inches on the 48 inch. Those three door widths are the orderable sizes.
17) What finishes does the PDQ 6300V come in for matching existing hardware in a building?
Eight finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 622 flat black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 630 satin stainless steel, and 630F full stainless steel. 630 satin stainless is the usual match for most commercial openings. One thing to watch when standardizing: the TLA head cover option is only offered in 630.
18) How quiet is the PDQ 6300V push bar in a corridor or lobby?
A cushion spring quiets the bar on both press and release, and a compression spring returns it after each push. Construction is a cast chassis support with an extruded aluminum rail, rated heavy duty, and the flush end cap has no exposed screws on the back of the bar for pry resistance.
