PDQ 6300C Wide Stile Concealed Vertical Rod Exit Device, Panic Rated

Grade 1 Wide Stile Concealed Vertical Rod Exit Device

The PDQ 6300C is a Grade 1 concealed vertical rod exit device for wide stile doors. Its top and bottom rods run inside the door instead of across the face, giving a cleaner look on openings where exposed hardware is a design concern. It is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1 and built for high-traffic commercial spaces.

A cast chassis, extruded aluminum rail and heavy-duty flush end cap give the device its strength, while cushion springs keep the push bar quiet when pushed and released and a compression spring returns the bar smoothly. The device and trim are non-handed. It is offered as a panic rated device and as a fire rated device (6300CF), in 24", 36" and 48" door widths.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose a concealed vertical rod exit device over a surface mounted one?
The 6300C hides its top and bottom rods inside the door instead of running them across the face, giving a cleaner look where exposed hardware is a design concern. The surface vertical rod 6300V is the alternative when visible rods are acceptable.

Is the 6300C rated for fire door pairs?
The fire rated 6300CF is ETL listed to UL 10C for fire exit hardware up to 3 hours and is rated for pairs up to 8' x 8'. The panic model is ETL listed to UL 305.

What is the minimum stile width for the 6300C?
It requires a 3-1/2" minimum stile. If the door stile is narrower, the narrow stile 6400C is the concealed rod option instead.

PDQ 6300C630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the PDQ 6300C concealed vertical rod exit device fit my door stile and thickness?
The 6300C needs a 3-1/2 inch minimum stile and fits doors 1-3/4 to 2 inches thick. Narrower stile than that and you want the narrow stile 6400C concealed rod device instead. Backset is a true 2-3/4 inches, and the rail projects 3-1/8 inches extended, 2-1/2 inches depressed, so check your clearance to adjacent walls or furniture.
2) Can I use the PDQ 6300C on a fire rated door?
No, not the 6300C. The panic version is ETL listed to UL 305 only. For a fire labeled opening you order the 6300CF, which is ETL listed to UL 10C fire exit hardware up to 3 hours and rated for pairs up to 8 feet by 8 feet. Note that dogging is not available on fire labeled devices, so the CF will not hold the latches retracted.
3) How tall a door will the 6300C work on, and what do I order for an 8 or 10 foot opening?
Panic applications go up to 10 feet tall. The standard device ships for a 7 foot door; taller openings are selected on the door height option, which covers 8 foot, 9 foot and 10 foot (8 to 10 foot) leaves so the concealed rods come the right length. Specify the height with the order rather than cutting rods in the field.
4) Do I need to order the 6300C left or right hand?
Handing is not a factor on the device itself, it is non-handed, and the trim is either non-handed or field reversible. One exception on the order form: the Alarmed Exit option does require you to specify handing.
5) Will the 6300C latch into my existing strikes, and what hits the floor?
The device comes with its own strikes, a cast top strike and a plate bottom strike, so plan on using those rather than existing hardware. The top latch is a stainless steel 3/4 inch toggle; the bottom is a drop bolt with 5/8 inch travel into the floor strike. If you do not want anything at the threshold, order it Less Bottom Rod.
6) Can I hold the 6300C unlocked during business hours?
Yes on panic devices. Hex key dogging is standard, and cylinder dogging (CD) is an option if you want to dog it with a key instead of a hex wrench. Indicator versions of both are available (HEX-IND, CD-IND). Dogging is not offered on fire labeled devices or on the 24 inch device.
7) Does the PDQ 6300C meet accessibility requirements for a school or hospital exit?
It complies with ADA and ICC/ANSI A117.1 as supplied, and it is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1 for heavy traffic. If your project is under the California Building Code and calls for reduced opening force, add the 5P accessibility option, which brings push force to a 5 pound maximum and meets CBC 11B-309.4.
8) Why pick a concealed vertical rod exit device instead of a surface mounted rod device?
Concealed rod means the top and bottom rods run inside the door leaf rather than across the push side face, which is what you want on a lobby or storefront opening where exposed hardware is a design issue. The tradeoff is door prep: the leaf has to be prepped for the rods. If visible rods are acceptable, the surface vertical rod 6300V is the simpler route on the same wide stile openings.
9) When should I order the Less Bottom Rod version of the 6300C?
LBR drops the bottom rod and drop bolt, which is the usual call where carpet, an uneven floor, or a drain makes a floor strike impractical, or on pairs where a bottom latch is not wanted. Top and Bottom Rods is the other choice and gives you two-point latching with the 5/8 inch travel drop bolt at the sill.
10) Which door widths does the PDQ 6300C come in and how long is the push bar on each?
Three standard widths: 24 inch (2'0"), 36 inch (3'0") and 48 inch (4'0") doors. Push bar length follows the width, 16 inches on the 24 inch door, 18 inches on the 36 inch, and 24 inches on the 48 inch. The 24 inch device is the one with restrictions, no cut and no dogging.
11) My door is an odd width. How much can a PDQ 6300C device be cut down?
Max cut depends on the device size and the options on it. A 36 inch device cuts 6 inches (8 inches on fire, or on CVR with cylinder dogging); a 48 inch device cuts 12 inches (14 inches fire); the 24 inch device cannot be cut. Electrified options tighten it: with MLR a 3 foot device cuts 3 inches and a 4 foot cuts 9 inches; alarmed exit allows 2 inches and 8 inches; delayed egress allows no cut on 3 foot and 6 inches on 4 foot.
12) What electrified options can I get on the PDQ 6300C for access control?
Motorized latch retraction (MLR) for remote unlocking, signal switch (SS) for request to exit and touch bar monitoring, latch bolt monitoring (LM), alarmed exit (including ALHW with hard wire power and relay), delayed egress, and ISMC Molex connectors ordered alongside the other electrified options. The delayed egress configuration is UL 294 listed. Watch the reduced max cut on MLR, alarm and delayed egress devices.
13) What fasteners come with the 6300C, and how do the latches attach on an aluminum door?
Machine and wood screws are included; sex nuts and bolts (SNB) are an extra-cost option, as are tamper proof security head screws (SHS). Latch mounting differs by door material: on steel and wood doors the latches mount with L brackets, and on aluminum doors they mount through the inside door face.
14) What finishes does the PDQ 6300C exit device come in to match the rest of my building's hardware?
Eight finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 622 flat black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 630 satin stainless steel and 630F full stainless steel. Each configuration carries its own part number, for example 6300C605. One note for matching: the TLA head cover option is 630 finish only.
