PDQ 6400CF Narrow Stile Concealed Vertical Rod Exit Device, Fire Rated

Grade 1 Narrow Stile Concealed Vertical Rod Exit Device

The PDQ 6400C is a Grade 1 concealed vertical rod exit device for narrow stile doors, suited to narrow stile double door applications. Its top and bottom rods run inside the door instead of up the face, for a rod-free appearance and a narrow frame profile. It is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1.

A cast chassis and heavy-duty flush end caps add strength and resist prying, a cushion spring keeps the push bar quiet, and a compression spring returns the bar smoothly each time. The top latch is a 3/4" stainless steel toggle and the bottom is a 5/8" travel drop bolt. It is offered as a panic rated device and as a fire rated device (6400CF), in 24", 36" and 48" door widths.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose the 6400C over the 6400V on a narrow stile door pair?
Choose the 6400C when the project needs a rod-free appearance, since it hides the vertical rods inside the door. The surface mounted 6400V runs the rods visibly up the face. Both fit the same stile widths.

Is the 6400C fire rated?
The fire rated 6400CF is ETL listed to UL 10C for fire exit hardware up to 3 hours, covering door pairs up to 8' x 8' (single or double egress). The panic model is ETL listed to UL 305.

Does the 6400C support keyed dogging?
Yes. Hex key dogging is standard on panic devices, with cylinder dogging available so the device can be held retracted with a keyed cylinder instead of a hex key. Dogging is not available on fire labeled or 24" devices.

PDQ 6400CF630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the minimum stile width for the PDQ 6400CF concealed vertical rod exit device?
The 6400CF needs a 3-1/8 inch stile when used with the 639027 or 639057 strike. On aluminum frames with the blade stop strike it drops to a 2-1/8 inch stile, which is what makes it workable on narrow stile storefront doors. The narrow stile rail itself measures 1-9/16 inches.
2) Will the PDQ 6400CF fit a 1-3/4 inch door, and how thick a door can it go on?
Door thickness range is 1-3/4 to 2 inches, so a standard 1-3/4 inch commercial door is covered. Anything outside that range has to be referred to the factory.
3) What is the fire rating on the PDQ 6400CF and what opening sizes does it cover?
The 6400CF is ETL listed to UL 10C as fire exit hardware up to 3 hours, covering door pairs (single or double egress) up to 8 feet by 8 feet, with either top and bottom latches or less bottom rod. The non-fire version of the device is ETL listed to UL 305 panic hardware instead.
4) Can I dog the PDQ 6400CF open during business hours?
No. Dogging is not available on fire labeled devices, so the 6400CF cannot be held retracted. Hex key dogging is standard and cylinder dogging optional only on the panic version of the 6400C, and even there it is excluded on 24 inch devices. If you need the opening dogged open during the day, you need a panic rated device, not a fire rated one.
5) What does less bottom rod (LBR) mean on a fire rated PDQ 6400CF, and when do I need the fire pin version?
Three rod choices are offered: top and bottom rods, Less Bottom Rod, and Less Bottom Rod with Fire Pin. LBR drops the bottom latch, which keeps the bottom of the door clear of a floor strike, useful where carpet, thresholds or sweeps get in the way. The LBR-FP option adds the fire pin and is the configuration used on fire rated pairs. The UL 10C listing covers both top/bottom latch and less bottom rod configurations.
6) Will the PDQ 6400CF latch into the strikes already on my opening?
Plan on using the PDQ strikes. The top latch is a 3/4 inch stainless steel toggle engaging a cast top strike, and the bottom is a 5/8 inch travel drop bolt engaging a plate bottom strike. The stile width you can work with depends on which top strike you use, 3-1/8 inch with the 639027/639057 strike or 2-1/8 inch on aluminum frames with the blade stop strike.
7) Do I have to order the PDQ 6400CF handed?
The device itself is non-handed, so the same unit works on either leaf of a pair. Trim is either non-handed or field reversible. One exception on the order form: if you add the Alarmed Exit option, handing has to be specified.
8) Can the PDQ 6400CF be cut down to fit a non-standard door width?
Yes, within limits. A 36 inch fire rated device can be cut up to 8 inches, and a 48 inch fire device up to 14 inches. The 24 inch device cannot be cut at all. Electrified versions cut less: with motorized latch retraction a 3 foot device takes 3 inches and a 4 foot device 9 inches; with the alarm option 2 inches and 8 inches; with delayed egress a 3 foot device cannot be cut and a 4 foot takes 6 inches.
9) What electrified options can I get on the PDQ 6400CF for access control?
Available electrified features are motorized latch retraction (MLR), signal switch for request to exit and touch bar monitoring (SS), latch bolt monitoring (LM), alarmed exit including the hard wired ALHW version with relay, delayed egress, and ISMC Molex connectors for plug-in wiring alongside the other electrified options. The delayed egress configuration is UL 294 listed. Keep the cut limits in mind, as electrified versions have shorter maximum cuts than mechanical ones.
10) What fasteners come with the PDQ 6400CF and how do the latches mount?
Machine and wood screws are included; sex nuts and bolts (SNB) are an extra-cost option, which is what you want on a door that gets abused or needs through-bolting. Latch mounting differs by door material: on steel and wood doors the latches mount with L brackets, and on aluminum doors they mount through the inside door face. Tamper proof security head screws (SHS) are also available.
11) Is the PDQ 6400CF rated for high traffic commercial openings?
Yes. It is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1, the top grade for exit devices, and is classed as heavy duty commercial. Construction is a cast chassis with heavy duty flush end caps that resist prying, an extruded aluminum rail, a cushion spring to keep the bar quiet and a compression spring to return it. That is the specification to standardize on for school, healthcare or multi-family egress doors.
12) What finishes does the PDQ 6400CF come in if I need to match other hardware in the building?
Eight finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 622 flat black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 630 satin stainless steel, and 630F full stainless steel. 630 satin stainless is the usual match for commercial storefront work. Note that the TLA head cover option is offered in 630 finish only. Each configuration has its own part number, for example 6400CF605.
