Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose the MRS over a cylindrical electronic lock?
MRS is built on a Grade 1 mortise lock body rather than a bored cylindrical chassis, which gives it the heavier latching and deadlocking of a mortise lock combined with electronic credentials.

Does the MRS track when the mechanical key is used?
Yes. MRS logs key override use so administrators know when the physical key bypassed electronic access, along with latchbolt monitoring and request to exit reporting.

How long does the MRS battery last?
MRS runs on four AA alkaline batteries for up to two years, with battery status and low battery alerts, or it can be powered by 5V DC.

PDQ MRSSPN136BJSJ630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the PDQ MRSSPN136 Spirit mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door?
Yes. The MRS-SP Spirit mortise lock is built for 1-3/4 inch doors as standard, with 2 inch and 2-1/4 inch thickness options available. Backset is 2-3/4 inches, the standard commercial mortise backset.
2) Is the MRSSPN136 handed, and can I reverse it in the field?
It ships handed, and you specify RH, RHR, LH or LHR when you order. The Spirit MRS is field reversible, with one exception: the Memphis lever is handed only, so if you pick Memphis you have to order the correct hand up front and cannot flip it on site.
3) Can I use this electronic lock on a 3-hour fire rated apartment door?
Yes. The Spirit MRS mortise lock is UL/cUL 10C listed for 3-hour fire doors and is fire rated as supplied. It also complies with ADA. Note it is rated for indoor use only, so it suits interior unit doors and corridor-side openings rather than exterior entrances.
4) What does the MRSSPN136 deadbolt function actually do on a multifamily unit door?
The 136 is the deadbolt function of the Spirit MRS line: a single cylinder deadbolt with a thumbturn on the inside for privacy. Electronic credentials and the mechanical key work from the outside, and the resident throws the bolt by thumbturn from inside. It is the function to spec when you want a deadlocking bolt on the unit door rather than a latching lockset function.
5) Can I key this PDQ Spirit lock into the keyway and master key system already in my building?
Yes, within a wide range. Keying is selected at order as KD, KO, KA, Keyed to Existing, MK or CMK, and the keyway list covers Schlage C, C-K and E, Arrow AR1, Corbin 59A1, 60 and L4, Falcon E-R, Kwikset, Russwin 981 and D1, Sargent LA and RA-RC, and Accentra (Yale) E1R and GA. The lock accepts conventional, SFIC, LFIC and high security cylinders, so an existing SFIC or interchangeable core program carries over.
6) Do I need to run wire or power to install the PDQ Spirit MRS?
No wiring is required. The Spirit MRS runs on four AA alkaline batteries, good for up to two years, with battery status and low battery alerts, and can alternatively be powered from 5V DC. That is the reason it gets specified for retrofits on occupied multifamily units, where pulling wire through finished unit doors is the expensive part.
7) What credentials will open the PDQ Spirit MRS, and which cards work with it?
Residents can open it by RFID card, smartphone over Bluetooth, or PIN on keypad-equipped models, with a mechanical key override. Card support covers MIFARE DESFire EV1/EV2/EV3/Light, MIFARE Ultralight EV1/AES and MIFARE Classic, with Prox available as an option. Communication is BLE 4.2 and 5.2 with AES 256 encryption. Keypad entry only exists on the Card + Keypad build, so if you want PIN codes you have to order that credential type.
8) What do I have to specify to order a PDQ MRSSPN136 correctly?
Every configuration gets its own PDQ part number, for example MRSSPN136PJSJ606. You pick credential type (Card or Card + Keypad), lever style (Philadelphia, Boston, Miami, Chicago, Dallas, Orlando, Los Angeles or Memphis), trim style (sectional round rose SJ or square rose SR, J-Trim), finish, plus handing, backset, strike, keyway and keying. Miss any of those and the order cannot be built.
9) Should I pick a mortise electronic lock like the Spirit MRS or a cylindrical electronic lock?
Choose the mortise version when the opening needs heavier latching and deadlocking and the door is already prepped for a mortise pocket. The Spirit MRS is built on the PDQ MR Series Grade 1 mortise lock body, so you get mortise-grade mechanics with electronic credentials. A bored cylindrical chassis is the lighter, simpler prep and is the alternative where the door has standard cross-bore prep instead of a mortise pocket.
10) How many units can I manage with the PDQ Spirit app, and does it need a network?
The lock runs standalone or online over Bluetooth, so a building network is not required to operate it. The PDQ Spirit app handles up to 25 locks and 50 users, which is a small-property or single-floor ceiling. If you are standardizing across a larger portfolio, plan on online mode with a management platform rather than the app alone.
11) Can I see who entered and whether maintenance used a key?
Yes. The Spirit MRS keeps an audit log of access events and specifically logs key override use, so you can tell when the physical key bypassed electronic access. It also provides latchbolt monitoring and request-to-exit reporting of egress, plus scheduled access windows, auto lock/unlock and a do-not-disturb mode.
12) Can the PDQ Spirit MRS go on an unheated corridor or an exterior building entrance?
It is rated for indoor use only, so keep it off exterior openings and anywhere exposed to weather. Operating range is -20C to 65C at 0 to 95 percent humidity, non-condensing, which covers an unconditioned interior corridor but not direct exposure.
13) Will the finish on these PDQ Spirit locks match the other hardware in my building?
Four finishes are offered: 606 satin brass, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 622 flat black and 630 satin stainless steel. 630 is the usual choice when the rest of the building is commercial stainless trim, and 622 for darker contemporary packages.
