PDQ KMSSPNK116626D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the PDQ KMSSPN116 Spirit deadbolt fit a 1-3/8 inch door, and what backset does it need?
The KMSSPN116 Spirit electronic deadbolt fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick, so both older interior unit doors and standard 1-3/4 inch commercial doors are covered. The backset is adjustable from 2-3/8 inch to 2-3/4 inch, which means it drops onto either of the two common bored backsets without a different part. It is non-handed, so one unit works on left and right hand doors.
2) Can I put the PDQ Spirit KMS deadbolt on a 20-minute fire rated unit door?
Yes. The KMSSPN116 is UL/cUL 10C listed for 20-minute doors, which is the typical rating on multifamily unit entry doors. It also complies with ADA and FCC Part 15.
3) Do I have to run wire to each door for the PDQ KMS Spirit electronic deadbolt?
No wiring is required. The KMS Spirit runs on four AA alkaline batteries (up to two years) and talks over Bluetooth Low Energy, BLE 4.2 or 5.2, with AES 256 encryption. It can run standalone or online. A 5V DC supply is an alternative power option if you do want to feed it, but battery operation is what makes it practical for retrofitting occupied units.
4) What is the difference between the Card and Card + Keypad versions of the PDQ KMSSPN116?
Credential Type is a choice you make when ordering. The Card version reads RFID credentials and smartphone, and part numbers run KMSSPN116 plus finish. The Card + Keypad version adds PIN entry on the keypad and carries a K in the number, for example KMSSPNK116606D. Both keep the mechanical key override. If residents or cleaning staff need a code instead of a card, order the keypad model, since PIN entry is only on keypad models.
5) Which access cards work with the PDQ Spirit KMS deadbolt? We already issue MIFARE credentials.
The KMS reads MIFARE DESFire EV1, EV2, EV3 and Light, MIFARE Ultralight EV1 and AES, and MIFARE Classic. Prox is available as an option if your existing building credentials are prox rather than MIFARE. Smartphone opening is supported as well.
6) Can the PDQ KMS Spirit deadbolt be keyed into our existing master key system?
Yes, keying is specified on the order. Options are KD keyed different, KO zero bitted, KA keyed alike, keyed to existing, MK master key, and CMK construction master key. The cylinder side can be a conventional cylinder, or SFIC prep less core if your locksmith is stacking your own small format cores. Conventional, SFIC and high security keyways are all supported.
7) Can I use the PDQ Spirit KMS deadbolt on an exterior door or an exposed breezeway entry?
Only if you order it with the optional IPX5 outdoor rating, which is a required selection at order time (None or IPX5). The lock operates from -20C to 65C at 0 to 95% humidity, non-condensing, so breezeway and unconditioned corridor installs are within range. For a weather-exposed opening, specify IPX5.
8) What happens to the PDQ KMS deadbolt if the batteries die?
Every KMS deadbolt includes a mechanical key override, so a maintenance tech with the right key gets in regardless of battery state. Before that point the lock reports battery status and sends low battery alerts, and the four AA alkalines are rated up to two years.
9) Which keyways can I order the PDQ KMSSPN116 in?
Keyway is a required selection and covers the common commercial families: Schlage C, Schlage C-K and Schlage E, Arrow AR1, Corbin 59A1, Corbin 60 and Corbin L4, Falcon E-R, Kwikset, Russwin 981 and Russwin D1, Sargent LA and Sargent RA-RC, Accentra (Yale) E1R and Accentra (Yale) GA. That lets the deadbolt fall under whatever key system the rest of the property already runs.
10) How many doors can the PDQ Spirit app manage, and is it enough for a whole apartment building?
The PDQ Spirit App handles up to 25 locks and 50 users, so it suits a small building or a single floor managed standalone. For a larger property with hundreds of units and resident turnover, plan on running the locks in online mode rather than relying on the app alone. The locks themselves support scheduled access windows, an audit log of access events, and door obstruction alerts.
11) Is the PDQ KMSSPN116 a single cylinder deadbolt, and what is on the inside of the door?
It is the single cylinder deadbolt function of the KMS-SP Spirit line. Single cylinder means one keyed cylinder with a thumbturn on the opposite side, rather than key access from both faces. The electronic reader and the mechanical key override handle the outside; the inside operates without a credential, which is what you want on a residential unit entry door.
12) Is the PDQ Spirit KMS deadbolt heavy duty enough for apartment turnover traffic, or is it a residential smart lock?
It is a commercial-grade product, built from the PDQ KM Series heavy duty deadbolt rather than a residential chassis, and it was designed specifically for unit doors in multifamily buildings. That is the distinction from a consumer smart deadbolt: commercial keyways, master keying, SFIC prep, and a UL/cUL 10C 20-minute fire listing.
13) What finishes does the PDQ Spirit KMS deadbolt come in, and do they match the rest of our door hardware?
Four finishes: 606 satin brass, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 622 flat black and 626 satin chrome. All four are available with either the card-only or card-plus-keypad reader and with either a conventional cylinder or SFIC prep, so finish does not limit your reader or cylinder choice. 626 satin chrome is the usual match for existing commercial brushed-chrome trim.
