Frequently Asked Questions

Is the SV knob lock ADA compliant?
No. Its round ball knob design does not meet ADA/ICC A117.1 operable-parts requirements for hardware usable without tight grasping or twisting, so it should be limited to applications where knob hardware is code-permitted.

What is the difference between the SV and the SX?
Both are PDQ ball knob cylindrical locks. The SV is Grade 2 certified and is the lower-traffic option, while the SX is Grade 1 for high-traffic doors.

What door prep does the SV fit?
The SV fits standard 161 door prep on doors 1-3/8" to 1-3/4" thick with a 2-3/4" or 2-3/8" backset, which makes it a straightforward retrofit for existing knob locksets.

PDQ SV126CQ630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the PDQ SV126 knob lock fit my existing 161 door prep?
Yes. The SV126 drops into standard 161 cylindrical prep on doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick, with a 2-3/4 inch standard backset or 2-3/8 inch optional. That covers the great majority of existing commercial knob locksets, so it is a direct retrofit without redrilling the door.
2) Does the SV126 lock or key at all, or does it just latch?
It is passage only, ANSI/BHMA F75. Both knobs always turn free, there is no cylinder, no key, and no locking. Use it on corridor, closet and other openings where you want a latched door with no security. If you need the door to lock, you need a keyed or privacy function from the SV series instead.
3) Can I use a PDQ SV126 knob lock on a 3-hour fire door?
Yes, within limits. The SV passage knob is UL/cUL 10C listed for 3-hour fire doors on single doors up to 4'0" x 8'0". Pairs and larger leaves are outside that listing. Because it is a passage function with a latching latchbolt and no lock, it keeps the door positively latched, which is what a fire door assembly requires.
4) Is a ball knob lock like the SV126 allowed where ADA compliance is required?
No. A round ball knob requires grasping and twisting, so it does not satisfy ADA/ICC A117.1 operable-parts requirements. Keep the SV126 to doors where knob hardware is code-permitted (some closets, mechanical spaces, non-accessible routes). On accessible openings you need a lever.
5) What do I have to pick besides finish when ordering the SV126?
Two choices are required at order: backset/faceplate and strike. Backset options are 234 (2-3/4 inch, 2-1/4 x 1-1/8 faceplate), 234F (2-3/4 inch, 2-1/4 x 1), 234FR (2-3/4 inch, 2-1/4 x 1 x 1/4 radius), 238F (2-3/8 inch, 2-1/4 x 1-1/8), 238 (2-3/8 inch, 2-1/4 x 1) and 238R (2-3/8 inch, 2-1/4 x 1 x 1/4 radius). Strike choices are ASA 1-1/4 x 4-7/8, T-strike 1-1/8 x 2-3/4, or FL full lip 1-5/8 x 2-1/4. Match the faceplate shape and strike to what is already cut into the door and frame.
6) Will the SV126 latch into the strike already in my frame?
The latchbolt throws 1/2 inch, and the lock ships with a strike you select, so you can match the existing frame cutout rather than re-mortising. If the frame has standard ASA prep, order the 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 ASA strike. For a hollow metal frame cut for a small strike, the T-strike (1-1/8 x 2-3/4) or full lip (1-5/8 x 2-1/4) option fits those preps.
7) Do I have to specify handing when ordering the PDQ SV126?
No handing to call out. The SV126 is non-handed, and the 1/2 inch solid brass latchbolt is adjustable for beveled doors, so one lock covers left and right hand openings. That makes it easy to stock a single part number across a building.
8) Should I use the PDQ SV or the SX knob lock for a high-traffic door?
Use the SX. Both are PDQ ball knob cylindrical locks, but the SV is ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Grade 2 standard duty and suits lower-traffic openings. The SX is Grade 1 and is the one to spec for high-traffic doors such as main corridors, classrooms and restrooms in heavy use.
9) What finishes does the PDQ SV126 come in, and will it match the brass knobs on my other doors?
Three finishes: 605 bright brass (SV126CQ605), 613E dark oxidized satin bronze (SV126CQ613E), and 630 satin stainless steel (SV126CQ630). For a building already on polished brass knobs, 605 is the match. The trim is a ball knob with a 3 inch diameter wrought rose, with stainless steel or wrought brass knobs and roses depending on finish.
10) Is the PDQ SV126 TAA compliant for a government job?
Yes, the SV series is TAA compliant, with country of origin Korea. Paired with its ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Grade 2 certification, it is a workable standard-duty passage knob for federal and other TAA-governed procurement where knob hardware is permitted.
