Frequently Asked Questions

Is the SV knob lock ADA compliant?
No. Its round ball knob design does not meet ADA/ICC A117.1 operable-parts requirements for hardware usable without tight grasping or twisting, so it should be limited to applications where knob hardware is code-permitted.

What is the difference between the SV and the SX?
Both are PDQ ball knob cylindrical locks. The SV is Grade 2 certified and is the lower-traffic option, while the SX is Grade 1 for high-traffic doors.

What door prep does the SV fit?
The SV fits standard 161 door prep on doors 1-3/8" to 1-3/4" thick with a 2-3/4" or 2-3/8" backset, which makes it a straightforward retrofit for existing knob locksets.

PDQ SV137CQ613ED – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Store Door function on the PDQ SV137 actually do?
The SV137 is the F91 Store Door function, meaning both knobs are keyed (double cylinder). A key on either side retracts the latch, and the latch is held retracted or projected by key from either side. There is no inside thumbturn or button, so you cannot leave the door free without a key. That makes it common on storefront back doors and tenant spaces where staff carry keys on both sides, and a poor choice on any egress door where free inside operation is required by code.
2) Will the SV137 latch into the strike already in my frame?
The latchbolt throws 1/2 inch, and the lock ships with the strike you select. Standard is the ASA 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inch strike, which is what most hollow metal commercial frames are prepped for. For a wood frame or a narrower jamb prep, choose the T-Strike at 1-1/8 x 2-3/4 inch or the Full Lip strike at 1-5/8 x 2-1/4 inch instead of re-mortising the jamb.
3) Can the PDQ SV137 be keyed into my building's existing master key system?
Yes. Keyed functions use a brass 6-pin cylinder keyed to 5 pins with two change keys per lock, and the lock can be keyed into an existing master key system. Keying choices run KD keyed different, OB 0-bitted with 2 blank keys, KA2, KA4 and KA keyed alike, MK master keyed, master keyed to existing bittings, and CMK construction master keyed. For an existing system, specify master keyed to existing bittings and your keyway.
4) Can I get the SV137 for small format interchangeable cores, or without a cylinder?
Both. Cylinder choices on the SV137 include the conventional key-in-knob cylinder, less cylinder, SFIC prep with a 6-pin core, SFIC prep with a 7-pin core, SFIC prep less core, SFIC prep with a construction core, and SFIC prep with a plastic construction core. On new construction where the owner supplies cores later, SFIC prep less core or with a construction core is the usual call. Example part numbers: SV137CQ630SF7 is satin stainless with a 7-pin SFIC core, SV137CQ630SFL is the same finish SFIC prep less core.
5) Is the PDQ SV137 fire rated for a 3-hour door?
Yes. The SV knob lock is UL/cUL 10C listed for 3-hour fire doors on single doors up to 4'0" x 8'0". Note the limits: single doors only at that listing, not a pair, and the leaf cannot exceed 4 feet by 8 feet.
6) Is a knob lock like the SV137 ADA compliant for an accessible entrance?
No. The round ball knob trim does not meet ADA/ICC A117.1 operable-parts requirements for hardware usable without tight grasping, pinching or twisting of the wrist. Keep the SV137 to openings where knob hardware is permitted (storage, mechanical spaces, non-accessible routes) and use lever trim on accessible doors.
7) Do I need to order a left-hand or right-hand PDQ SV137?
No handing to specify. The SV137 is non-handed, and the 1/2 inch throw solid brass latchbolt is adjustable for beveled doors, so one part number covers either swing. Useful if you are stocking spares for a building with doors swinging both ways.
8) Which keyways can I get the PDQ SV137 in?
Schlage C (SCC) is standard, and the SV137 is also offered in Schlage E, Schlage C-K, Arrow AR1, Corbin 59A1, Corbin 60, Corbin L4, Russwin D1, Sargent LA, Sargent RA-RC, Accentra (Yale) E1R, Accentra (Yale) GA, Falcon E-R, Kwikset (5-pin only), and PDQ TA restricted. That range is what lets it go onto a site already keyed to another manufacturer without rekeying the whole building.
9) Should I use the PDQ SV or the SX for a busy entrance?
Grade decides it. The SV137 is ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Grade 2, standard duty, aimed at lower-traffic commercial openings. The PDQ SX is the Grade 1 ball knob cylindrical lock for high-traffic doors. If the opening is a main entrance, a corridor, or anything cycling all day, go Grade 1; for back-of-house and lower-use doors, Grade 2 is appropriate.
10) What do I have to specify when ordering the PDQ SV137?
Five things beyond the lock itself: finish, cylinder type, backset with faceplate, strike, keyway, and keying. Each combination carries its own PDQ part number, for example SV137CQ605D is the bright brass ball knob with a conventional cylinder. Backset and strike are the two that get missed most often, and they are the two that decide whether it goes into the existing prep.
11) Will the PDQ SV137 work on a 1-3/4 inch hollow metal door, or do I need a thickness option?
One lock covers the range. The SV137 fits doors 1-3/8 inch through 1-3/4 inch thick, which takes in both the 1-3/4 inch standard commercial hollow metal door and the thinner 1-3/8 inch older interior door, so there is no thickness variant to pick.
12) What finishes does the PDQ SV137 come in, and will it match my other door hardware?
Three finishes: 605 bright brass, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, and 630 satin stainless steel. Knobs and the 3 inch diameter wrought roses come in stainless steel or wrought brass depending on finish. 630 satin stainless is the usual match for commercial openings already running US32D/satin chrome-family hardware; 605 is the polished brass look and 613E the dark bronze.
