Frequently Asked Questions

Is the SV knob lock ADA compliant?
No. Its round ball knob design does not meet ADA/ICC A117.1 operable-parts requirements for hardware usable without tight grasping or twisting, so it should be limited to applications where knob hardware is code-permitted.

What is the difference between the SV and the SX?
Both are PDQ ball knob cylindrical locks. The SV is Grade 2 certified and is the lower-traffic option, while the SX is Grade 1 for high-traffic doors.

What door prep does the SV fit?
The SV fits standard 161 door prep on doors 1-3/8" to 1-3/4" thick with a 2-3/4" or 2-3/8" backset, which makes it a straightforward retrofit for existing knob locksets.

PDQ SV176CQ630 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the PDQ SV176 privacy knob lock fit my existing 161 door prep?
Yes. The SV176 drops into standard 161 cylindrical prep on doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches thick, with either a 2-3/4 inch (standard) or 2-3/8 inch backset. That covers nearly every existing commercial knob lockset opening, so pulling an old knob lock and installing this one needs no new boring. The 3 inch diameter wrought rose will also cover most existing rose footprints.
2) Is the PDQ SV176 keyed, or is it a bathroom/bedroom privacy lock?
Non-keyed. The SV176 is the privacy function (ANSI/BHMA F76) of the PDQ SV Series, so it locks from the inside for bathrooms, bedrooms, exam rooms and similar doors. There is no cylinder and no key to pin into a master system. If you need a keyed opening, order a keyed function in the same SV Series instead.
3) Does a knob lock like the PDQ SV176 meet ADA requirements?
No. The round ball knob does not satisfy ADA/ICC A117.1 operable-parts requirements, which call for hardware usable without tight grasping, pinching or wrist twisting. Use it only where knob hardware is code-permitted, such as doors not on an accessible route or within a dwelling unit. For accessible openings you need a lever trim privacy set.
4) Which strike comes with the PDQ SV176 and what if my frame has a T-strike prep?
The standard strike is an ASA 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inch. If your frame is prepped for a smaller cutout, the strike is a required selection at order time and you can choose a T-Strike 1-1/8 x 2-3/4 inch or a Full Lip strike 1-5/8 x 2-1/4 inch instead. Match the strike to the existing frame prep so you are not patching a frame. The latch has a 1/2 inch throw, standard for cylindrical latching into any of these three strikes.
5) Do I have to specify handing when ordering the PDQ SV176?
No handing needed. The SV176 is non-handed, and the 1/2 inch solid brass latchbolt is adjustable for beveled doors, so one part number works on left or right hand openings. That makes it easier to stock as a fleet spare across a building.
6) Is Grade 2 enough for my building, or should I step up to Grade 1?
The SV Series is ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Grade 2, standard duty. That suits lower-traffic commercial openings such as offices, restrooms in smaller facilities and multi-family interiors. For high-traffic doors, PDQ's SX Series is the Grade 1 ball knob cylindrical equivalent and is the one to spec on school corridors or heavy public traffic.
7) Is the PDQ SV176 TAA compliant for a government job?
Yes, the SV Series is TAA compliant, with country of origin Korea. That makes it usable on federal and other TAA-governed procurement where domestic-or-designated-country sourcing is required.
8) What finishes does the PDQ SV176 privacy knob come in, and will it match existing hardware?
Three finishes: 605 bright brass, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, and 630 satin stainless steel. Knobs and roses are stainless steel or wrought brass depending on finish. 630 is the usual match for existing satin stainless or US32D commercial trim, 605 for polished brass, and 613E for dark bronze openings.
9) How do I write the full PDQ part number for an SV176 order?
The configuration builds into one number: SV176 for the privacy function, CQ for the ball knob trim, then the finish code. A bright brass set is SV176CQ605, dark oxidized satin bronze is SV176CQ613E, satin stainless is SV176CQ630. Backset and strike are selected separately on the order.
