Pro-Lok AO-31 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What does the Pro-Lok AO-31 button lifter actually do on a car lockout?
The AO-31 is a long reach car opening tool built to lift vertical lock buttons, the older post-style knobs that stand up from the door panel. You get the tool past the weatherstrip or through the opened window gap, reach down to the button, and pull it up. Pro-Lok also lists it as a slide lock tool, so it works the sliding lock actuators found on many door panels as well.
2) Is a button lifter the right tool, or do I need a different car opening tool for my lockout?
A button lifter like the Pro-Lok AO-31 is for lock mechanisms you can reach and physically move, meaning vertical lock buttons and slide-style lock actuators inside the door panel. If the vehicle uses an electric lock switch or an inside door handle release with no exposed button, a lifter is the wrong shape for the job and you want a long reach tool with a hooked or looped tip instead. Check what the interior lock control looks like before you pick the tool.
3) Do I order the Pro-Lok AO-31 in a size or handing, or is it one configuration?
One configuration. The button lifter ships as model AO-31 with no length, finish, or handing choice to specify, so there is nothing to select on the order beyond quantity.
4) Is the Pro-Lok AO-31 meant for professional locksmith use or for a homeowner's glovebox?
Pro-Lok classes the AO-31 as a commercial automotive tool, so it is aimed at locksmiths, roadside service, repo and fleet operations doing lockouts as part of their work rather than at one-off consumer use.
