1) Will the Prodatakey Red single-gang reader fit a standard single-gang electrical box?
The Red single-gang reader measures 3.25 x 5.1 x 0.71 inches, so it covers a standard single-gang box and sits under an inch off the wall or mullion. That 0.71 inch depth is what matters if you are mounting it on a narrow aluminum stile next to a glass front door, where a full-size wall reader would overhang the frame.
2) Can I put the Prodatakey Red reader outside, and how cold can it get?
Rated IP55 and good from -31 to +150 F (-35 to +66 C), with 0 to 95 percent non-condensing humidity. IP55 means dust-protected and sealed against low-pressure water jets from any direction, so a perimeter door, a gate pedestal, or an unheated parking structure is within spec. It is not a submersion rating, so do not set it where standing water can reach it.
3) Will a Prodatakey Red reader still read our old 125 kHz prox cards?
Yes. The Red reader runs both 125 kHz proximity and 13.56 MHz high-security in the same unit, with a 125 kHz read range up to 4 inches. That is the point of it for a building mid-migration: you keep issuing to the existing prox population while you roll out DESFire EV2 credentials, and you do not swap readers twice.
4) Does the Prodatakey Red reader work with a non-Prodatakey access control panel?
It outputs both OSDP and Wiegand, so it wires to any controller that takes either protocol, not just pdk.io panels. Wiegand is the fallback path for legacy boards; OSDP is what you want on anything new, since it is the encrypted, supervised channel. Confirm which one your panel's reader port speaks before you pull wire, because the terminations differ.
5) How far can I run cable to a Prodatakey Red reader, and can I daisy-chain several on one run?
On Wiegand the limit is 500 feet using 22 AWG. On OSDP the reader supports multi-drop, so several readers share a single cable run instead of a home run per door. For a corridor of openings or a retrofit where you cannot get new wire back to the panel, the multi-drop path is the one that saves the labor.
6) What power supply do I need for a Prodatakey Red reader, and how much current does it draw?
Input is 5 to 16V DC, drawing 118 mA average and 169 mA peak. A linear supply is recommended over a switching one, because switching supply noise shows up as read dropouts. Size the panel's aux output against 169 mA per reader when you are budgeting a multi-door board, not the average figure.
