1) Will the PDK Red mullion reader fit on a narrow aluminum door mullion?
Yes. The PDK Red mullion reader measures 1.7 x 5.1 x 0.71 inches, which is the mullion form factor meant for the narrow vertical face of an aluminum storefront frame. If you need a wall-mount unit that covers a standard single-gang electrical box instead, this is not it.
2) Can this PDK reader read both 125 kHz prox cards and 13.56 MHz smart credentials?
Both. The Red reader handles 125 kHz proximity and 13.56 MHz high-security credentials in the same unit, which is what lets a building run legacy prox cards while migrating to secure credentials on the same readers. It supports MiFare DESFire EV2 encryption on the high-frequency side.
3) Does the PDK Red reader output Wiegand so I can use it with my existing panel?
It outputs both OSDP and Wiegand protocol, so it can drop onto an existing Wiegand panel as well as run OSDP back to a PDK controller. On Wiegand the cable run is rated to 500 feet on 22AWG.
4) What voltage and current do I need to size the power supply for a PDK Red mullion reader?
Each reader takes 5 to 16V DC, drawing 106 mA average and 144 mA maximum. PDK recommends a linear supply rather than a switching one. Budget off the 144 mA figure per reader when you total a multi-reader run.
5) Is the PDK Red mullion reader rated for an exterior door?
It carries an IP55 protection rating and operates from -31 to +150 F (-35 to +66 C) at 0 to 95 percent non-condensing humidity, so it is suited to an exterior storefront or gate mullion in most climates.
6) Can I run several PDK Red readers on one cable instead of homerunning each one?
Yes, that is what the OSDP multi-drop support is for. One cable length can serve multiple readers on the bus, so you skip a dedicated home run to every door. Wiegand does not work that way; wired Wiegand is a per-reader run, good to 500 feet on 22AWG.
7) Does this reader need PDK's cloud platform to work?
The Red reader is built for pdk.io, PDK's cloud access platform, which is where real-time updates, cloud backup and support come from. Because the reader also outputs standard Wiegand, the reader itself can feed a third-party panel, but the PDK managed experience assumes a PDK controller on pdk.io.

9) How close does a card have to be to the PDK Red reader?
Read range on 125 kHz proximity credentials is up to 4 inches. That is normal presentation distance, so mount it where a cardholder can comfortably touch the credential to the face, and keep in mind metal mullion mounting can affect real world range.
