1) Can the PDK HVC power a Cloud Node or single io controller off a nearby line voltage circuit?
That is exactly what the HVC high voltage converter is for. It accepts 90 to 264VAC auto-ranging input at 47 to 63Hz and puts out 12VDC at 0 to 2 amps, so you can tap the closest high voltage source at the door instead of pulling a low voltage power run all the way back to the controller.
2) Will the Prodatakey HVC work on 208V or 240V, or is it 120V only?
Both. The converter auto-ranges across 90 to 264Vac, so 120V, 208V, 230V and 240V circuits all work with no jumper or switch setting. Draw at full 12V/2A load runs about 1A on a 90 to 132Vac feed and about 0.5A on a 180 to 264Vac feed.
3) Can the PDK HVC converter be mounted outdoors or in a wet location?
No. The metal lockable security can is rated indoor use only. For an exterior gate or an unconditioned shell, mount the HVC inside a protected space or a separately rated weatherproof enclosure and run the 12VDC out to the device. Operating humidity range is 10 to 90 percent.
4) Is 2 amps at 12VDC enough to run a controller and a maglock or strike off the same converter?
Budget it carefully. The HVC gives you 12VDC with a hard ceiling of 2 amps total, which covers a Cloud Node or a single io controller and light reader load. Add an inrush-heavy lock and you can trip the over-current protection, which cuts back and auto recovers. For lock power, feed it from a separate supply.
5) How much wall space do I need for the HVC enclosure?
Plan for a 5 x 5 x 2 inch footprint (W x H x D) for the metal can, plus clearance to swing the cover and to bring line voltage in. Installed weight is 1.37 lbs.
6) What happens to the PDK HVC if the output shorts or the closet gets hot?
Protection is built in and self-resetting: over-current, over-temperature, short circuit and over-voltage all shut back with auto recovery, so nobody has to reset a breaker at the can. Full 2A output is good to +50C ambient, derated to 80 percent load at +60C and 60 percent load at +70C, which matters if it is going in an unventilated ceiling space or an equipment room that runs warm.
7) What size wire do I run from the HVC to the controller?
The HVC is supplied for an 18 gauge 2 conductor low voltage run on the 12VDC side. Keep that run short and within the 2 amp output so voltage drop does not pull the controller below spec. The line voltage side is hardwired into the can and is an electrician's connection.
8) How reliable is the PDK HVC for a facility where I am standardizing power on every door?
Rated life is greater than 100,000 hours at 100 percent load with normal input at 25C, and average efficiency at 25, 50 and 100 percent load is 82 percent or better. For a fleet install, that plus the lockable metal can and the self-recovering protection is what makes it repeatable door to door.
9) Is the enclosure secure enough to leave in a public corridor?
The HVC ships in a metal lockable security can, so the converter and the line voltage terminations are not exposed once it is closed. It is indoor rated only, so a corridor or closet is fine, an exterior wall is not.
