1) How many doors will the PDK Red 8 controller run, and does it come with power?
The Red 8 handles eight doors from a single board, with eight form-C relays rated 2A each, eight reader connections, and eight Input A and Input B terminals. Power is built in: an Altronix eFlow 102NB supply, 120VAC 60Hz in, 12VDC out, mounted in the same can. So for an eight-door job you are not buying a separate power supply and enclosure on top.
2) Can the Red 8 power my card readers and strikes, or do I need a second power supply?
The built-in bus powers readers and other door hardware directly, with 10A concurrent maximum across the bus at 12 VDC. The board itself draws only 35mA idle, so nearly the whole 10A is available to your field devices. Add up the draw of eight readers plus strikes or maglocks against that 10A before you commit. If you exceed it, the door hardware goes on its own supply.
3) Will the Red 8 enclosure fit where my old panel is mounted?
The metal lockable can measures 14.25 x 18.25 x 4.0625 inches (W x H x D). It is rated for indoor use only, so a parking structure wall or an exterior mechanical closet exposed to weather is not the spot for it. Check depth clearance in particular, since 4-1/16 inches is deeper than a bare controller board can.
4) Does the Red 8 work with OSDP readers or only Wiegand?
Both. The Red 8 supports OSDP or Wiegand on its reader ports, so it will take existing Wiegand readers on a retrofit and OSDP readers where you want encrypted reader-to-panel communication. Credential and mobile communication is encrypted, and the panel's network traffic uses AES 128-bit.
5) What do I need to add to run the Red 8 wirelessly or over PoE?
Wireless and PoE++ are not on the base board. Ethernet is standard; for the other two you buy the WiMAC wireless module kit or the PoE++ module kit separately and plug it into the Red 8 board. WiMAC runs 2.4 GHz on 802.15.4, with about 1 mile line of sight and 450 feet indoor average, which is what makes it the answer for a gate house or a detached building where pulling Cat6 is the expensive part.
6) What else do I have to order to make the Red 8 UL 294 compliant?
A 12 ah backup battery. It is not included with the Red 8 and it is required for UL 294 compliance. Budget it into any job where the specification calls for UL 294, along with the space for it in the can.
7) Do I have to configure an IP address to get the PDK Red 8 on the network?
No. Plug in an Ethernet cable and the cloud node discovers the Red 8 automatically, with no IP address entry. That matters on a multi-tenant or IT-controlled network where you are not getting a static address assigned quickly. Ethernet is built in on the board.
8) Can I mount the PDK Red 8 in an unconditioned space like a garage or a warehouse mechanical room?
Temperature range is -4 to +140 F (-20 to +60 C) and humidity 0 to 95 percent relative, non-condensing. That covers an unheated warehouse or a hot attic mechanical space. What it does not cover is anywhere the can gets wet or sees condensation, since the enclosure is indoor use only.
9) If I use my own power supply instead of the one in the Red 8, what am I limited to?
PDK's guidance is to use the supplied Altronix supply. If you feed the board from something else, it has to be a regulated supply outputting no more than 24 volts measured with a multimeter. The board's own operating voltage is 12 VDC. Running it off an unregulated transformer is how these boards get damaged.
10) I only need four doors now but might expand later. Is the eight-door Red 8 the right call?
It depends on whether the growth is real. The Red 8 gives you eight relays, eight reader ports, and a 10A supply in one can, so adding doors five through eight later is terminating wire, not buying another panel or another enclosure. If the building genuinely stops at four doors, a smaller PDK Red controller is the cleaner buy. If you are phasing a building or a campus, the spare capacity in the Red 8 is what saves the second truck roll, and the system scales past this panel by adding more controllers.
11) How do I know if the Red 8 panel or its battery has a problem before a door fails?
The power circuit is fully supervised. It monitors input voltage, output voltage, battery voltage, and overall controller health, so a failing backup battery or a lost input shows up as a reported condition rather than as a dead door on a Monday morning. For an MRO or facilities team running doors across several buildings, that supervision is the difference between scheduled battery replacement and an emergency call.
