1) How many doors can the PDK Red Max enclosure actually control out of the box, and how do I get to 24?
Out of the box the Red Max ships with two Red 4 expander boards, so it controls eight doors immediately. The enclosure is built to accept additional Red expansion boards (one-door, two-door, and four-door versions) up to a total of 24 doors from the single can. So you buy the Max for the enclosure, power, and first eight doors, then add boards as the building grows.
2) Will the Red Max enclosure fit in my IT closet, and can it be mounted outdoors?
The metal lockable can measures 20.75 x 26.75 x 4.125 inches, so plan on roughly a two-foot-square footprint of clear wall with door swing clearance. It is rated indoor use only. If the access control point is on an exterior wall or in an unconditioned space, it needs to go inside a protected area or into a third-party weather-rated enclosure. Operating range is -4 to +140 F at 0 to 95 percent non-condensing humidity.
3) Do I need a separate power supply for readers and maglocks, or is it all in the Red Max?
Power is included. Two Altronix eFlow 102NB supplies come in the can, 120VAC 60Hz in and 12VDC out, and there is a built-in bus for powering readers and other door hardware. The bus is rated 10A concurrent max, so size your locks against that: continuous-duty maglocks and electric strikes add up fast across eight or more openings. PDK's note is to use the supplied power supply; if you substitute, use a regulated supply putting out no more than 24 volts measured at the terminals.
4) Is a backup battery included with the PDK Red Max?
No battery ships with it. An 8 Ah backup battery is required to comply with UL 294, and you order it separately. For an institutional or government job where the access control system has to be listed, budget the batteries as part of the package, not an afterthought.
5) What do I have to do for IP configuration when I install PDK Red expander boards?
Nothing, in most cases. Each Red expander has built-in Ethernet and self-discovery, so when you plug in the Ethernet cable the cloud node finds the board automatically. You do not enter an IP address. That matters on multi-tenant and campus jobs where the IT group controls the network and you are not getting static addresses handed to you.
6) What is actually on a Red 4 expander board for wiring up a door?
Per four-door board you get four industrial-grade 2A form-C relays, four reader connections, four Input A and four Input B terminals, all on removable screw-down terminals. That gives each opening a lock relay, a reader, and two inputs, which covers a request-to-exit and a door position switch. The two-door and one-door boards scale the same set down proportionally.
7) I need relay outputs for elevators and auxiliary devices, not card readers. Does the Red Max handle that?
Yes, through the Aux 8 expander board, which the Max enclosure accepts alongside the door boards. The Aux 8 carries eight industrial-grade 2A form-C relays and eight inputs plus its own built-in power supply, on removable screw-down terminals. That is the board for elevator floor control, gates, overhead doors, or monitored auxiliary points rather than a reader-controlled opening.
8) Does PDK Red support OSDP readers and mobile credentials?
It does. Red devices run OSDP along with mobile and encrypted credential communication, and the platform pushes automatic firmware updates so the security stays current. If you are migrating a facility off unencrypted Wiegand, that is the reason to specify Red over a legacy panel.
9) Can I monitor power and battery health on the Red Max remotely?
Yes. The Max runs a fully supervised power circuit that reports input voltage, output voltage, battery voltage, and overall controller health. For an MRO or property management team covering multiple buildings, that means a failing standby battery shows up in the software instead of on the morning someone gets locked out.
