RCI 4319-09 32D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the RCI 4319 electric strike work with my cylindrical lever lock, or is it only for mortise locks?
Both. The 4319 has an enlarged latch cavity that takes cylindrical locks, narrowline aluminum and centerline mortise locks (including the 3-piece anti-friction type), and mortise exit devices. What it will not accept is a latch with more than 3/4 inch projection, since the strike is built specifically for a 3/4 inch latch projection.
2) What does fail-safe mean on the RCI 4319, and is that the right choice for my opening?
Fail-safe means the strike is unlocked when power is removed, so a power loss releases the door. That is what you want on an opening where free egress or free passage has to be guaranteed during an outage, and it is typically what a fire alarm release circuit is wired to. If you need the door to stay locked when power drops, fail-safe is the wrong configuration and you want a fail-secure version of the strike instead. The 4319 is configured fail-safe only.
3) Will the 4319 fit an aluminum storefront frame, or do I need a deeper frame?
Cut-out depth is 1-1/2 inches, which the 4 Series is built around to suit most aluminum and wood frame profiles. Measure the available depth behind your frame face before you cut: if you have less than 1-1/2 inches of clear depth, the body will not seat. The faceplate is 9 inches with square corners, so the frame face has to have that much unobstructed run.
4) Is the RCI 4319 electric strike fire rated?
No. The 4319 is not a fire rated strike, so it should not be used on a labeled fire door assembly. It does carry UL 294 Listing for access control and UL 1034 Burglary-Resistant Listing, and it is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1. For a labeled opening you need a strike specifically fire rated for that use.
5) What voltage do I need to order the RCI 4319 in, and does polarity matter on the wiring?
Two voltages are offered: 12 VDC and 24 VDC. Pick the one that matches your power supply or access control panel output. The coil is non polarity-conscious, so crossed leads are not a concern at the strike.
6) My existing latch throws more than 3/4 inch. Can I still use the 4319?
No. The 4319 keeper and cavity are sized for a 3/4 inch latch projection, so a deadlatch or lock with a longer throw will not release cleanly and can bind in the keeper. Match the strike to the measured projection of the latch on the door rather than forcing it.
7) What door thicknesses does the RCI 4319 strike cover?
It works with doors from 1-3/8 inch up to 2-3/8 inch, so it covers standard 1-3/4 inch commercial doors, older 1-3/8 inch interior doors, and thicker aluminum or custom leaves up to 2-3/8 inch.
8) Is the RCI 4319 suitable for standardizing across a school or hospital, and is it ADA compliant?
The 4319 is a commercial-duty strike certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1 and UL 294 Listed, which is the level institutional specs normally call for on access-controlled openings. It carries no ADA compliance designation, so where a barrier-free opening is required the ADA answer comes from the operator and trim on the door, not from the strike. It matters on exterior and high-traffic openings. The 4 Series body uses an anti-vibration construction so the keeper cannot be walked open by shaking or hammering the door, which is a common defeat method on surface-applied strikes. That, plus the UL 1034 Burglary-Resistant Listing, is what separates it from a light-duty interior strike.
