RCI RCI-VR165 32D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the RCI VR165 electric strike work with a concealed vertical rod exit device?
That's exactly what the VR165 is built for. It's a surface mounted electric strike for concealed vertical rod exit devices, and it takes a 5/8 inch (16mm) roller latch at the head. If your exit device uses a top latch bolt rather than a roller latch, the VR165 is not the right strike for it. Check the top latch on the device before ordering.
2) Does the VR165 stay locked or unlock when the power goes out?
It stays locked. The VR165 is a fail secure strike, so on a power loss the keeper holds the roller latch and the opening remains secured from the outside. Free egress still comes from the exit device itself, since pushing the bar retracts the latch mechanically with no power involved. If your code official requires the opening to release on power loss, you need a fail safe device instead.
3) What voltage does the RCI VR165 strike need, and can I run it on my existing 12V access control power supply?
The VR165 is field selectable for 12/24VDC and 12-24VAC, so a 12VDC supply runs it without any additional module. Current draw is 450mA maximum at 12VDC, which is the worst case figure to size your supply against. Selection is made at the strike, so one part number covers all four power configurations.
4) My exit device latch doesn't line up perfectly with the frame. Does the VR165 have any adjustment?
Up to 1/4 inch (6.4mm) of adjustment is built in to compensate for door and frame misalignment, and there's a separate door stop adjustment to suit different rail thicknesses. On retrofit work with an out of square frame or a sagged door, that's usually the difference between a clean install and having to rework the head. Beyond 1/4 inch of misalignment the frame has to be corrected.
5) Is the RCI VR165 strike UL Listed and what grade is it?
UL 294 Listed for access control and UL 1034 Burglary-Resistant Listed, and certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.31 Grade 1. For an institutional spec that calls for a Grade 1 electric strike with burglary resistance on an exit device opening, the VR165 meets it on both counts.
6) Do I have to order the VR165 handed for a left or right hand door?
No handing to specify. The VR165 is non handed, so the same part goes on a left or right hand opening. That also means it's the strike to standardize on if you're keeping stock for a building with doors swinging both ways.
7) How much force will the VR165 electric strike hold on a high traffic entrance?
1,500 lbf static and 70 dynamic ft-lb, with a 250,000 cycle rating. The keeper is stainless steel and uses a conventional one moving part design that spreads the load evenly rather than concentrating it. That cycle count puts it in range for a main entry or a school corridor door, not just a back of house opening.
8) Can someone pop an electric strike open by hitting or shaking the door?
The VR165 uses a horizontal solenoid specifically to stop vibration from throwing the keeper, so rapping or shaking the door won't manipulate it open. Mounting is secured with lockdown tabs and HEX socket head cap screws rather than standard fasteners, which adds tamper resistance on the exposed surface mount.
9) What comes in the box with the RCI VR165, and do I need any special tools?
The HEX key installation tool is included, so you don't need to source a driver for the socket head cap screws. Wiring is a plug in connector, which means no field terminating at the strike. What isn't included is the power supply, so plan that around 450mA at 12VDC, plus whatever access control device or reader is switching it.
10) What finish does the RCI VR165 vertical rod strike come in?
Satin stainless steel, ordered as VR165 32D. Since 32D is the standard satin stainless commercial finish, it blends with the aluminum and stainless storefront and hollow metal frames these strikes usually land on, and matches most exit device finishes already on the openings.
