Sta-Kon J975SP – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon J975SP ring terminal accept?
The J975SP takes 1/0 through 2/0 AWG copper conductors. If your cable is 2 AWG or smaller, or 3/0 and up, this is the wrong barrel size and the crimp won't hold.
2) What voltage is this 1/0 copper ring terminal rated for?
600 V. That covers typical commercial panelboard, switchgear, motor connection, and generator or battery work up to 600 volts. It is not a medium-voltage termination.
3) Is the Sta-Kon J975SP insulated, and do I need to add anything over it?
It's a non-insulated terminal, bare silver-plated copper. Wherever the connection needs covering, plan on heat shrink or a boot over the barrel, and keep the required air clearance in mind if it's sitting in a panel.
4) Can I use this ring terminal on aluminum cable?
No. The J975SP is a copper terminal and should be used on copper conductors only. Aluminum feeders need an AL-rated or AL9CU dual-rated lug with the appropriate compound.
5) Should I use a ring terminal or a spade terminal on a 1/0 battery or panel connection?
On 1/0 and 2/0 current-carrying connections, use the ring style like the J975SP. The closed ring cannot vibrate off the stud if the nut loosens, which is why it's the standard choice for battery, generator, and busbar landings. Spade or flanged fork terminals only make sense where you need to pull the lead without removing the nut, and at this conductor size that convenience is rarely worth the risk.
6) Is the J975SP a crimp lug or a mechanical set-screw lug?
It's a compression (crimp) ring terminal, so you need the matching die and crimp tool for a 1/0 to 2/0 barrel. If you don't have a hydraulic or large manual crimper on site, a set-screw mechanical lug is the better call for that job.
7) What is the J975SP terminal made of, and why is it silver plated?
Copper barrel and tongue with a silver plate. Silver plating is used where low contact resistance matters on high-current connections, and it holds up better than bare copper against oxidation at the bolted joint. Finish reads as metallic, not colour coded.
8) Where is the Sta-Kon J975SP made?
Mexico. Useful if your project has country-of-origin reporting on the submittal package.
