1) Does the Rockwood 106x70C meet ANSI A156.6 for architectural door trim?
It is built to ANSI A156.6, type J405. That is the standard institutional and MRO specifiers write pull plates to, so it drops into a spec calling for A156.6 trim without a substitution request.
2) What should I use instead of the Rockwood 106x70C if the opening needs a wider pull grip?
The Ives 8303 is a heavy duty pull plate offered with 8 inch or 10 inch center-to-center mounting, which puts the grip well beyond the 6 inch center-to-center pull on the Rockwood 106x70C. That matters on wide or heavy doors where a hand travels further, and on gloved-hand traffic. Both are heavy commercial pull plates; the deciding factor is the pull spacing the opening calls for.
3) Is the Rockwood 106x70C stainless steel, and will it hold up in a high traffic or exterior entrance?
The plate and pull are stainless steel in 630 satin stainless (US32D), which is the standard commercial finish for schools, hospitals, and retail entrances where the trim gets washed down and hit all day. Stainless does not plate-wear the way a brass finish does, so scuffs blend rather than showing brass through.
4) Should I use screws or thru bolts to mount a pull plate on a hollow metal door?
Use the thru bolts for anything that gets pulled on. The 106x70C comes with both: #6 x 5/8 inch sheet metal screws and 1/4-20 x 2-1/4 inch thru bolts with finish washers. Screws alone into a hollow metal face will work loose under repeated pull force; the 1/4-20 thru bolt carries the load through the door and is the standard duty mounting for this plate. Ives 8302 is another heavy duty pull plate sold specifically with thru bolt mounting if you want a second option.
5) What are my options if 6 inch center to center is wrong for my door?
Center spacing is not adjustable on a one piece pull plate, so a different CTC means a different part. Ives 8303 is a heavy duty pull plate offered in 8 inch or 10 inch center to center for wider grip spacing. Going the other way, Trimco's 1010 Series is 5 inch CTC and the 1012 and 1013 are 5.5 inch CTC. Pick the one that matches the prep or the grip you want, because the 106x70C is fixed at 6 inch.
6) What is the difference between the Rockwood 106x70C and the Ives 8302 pull plate?
Both are heavy commercial stainless-grade pull plates that mount through the door. The Ives 8302 is a heavy duty pull plate specified with through bolt mounting. The Rockwood 106x70C ships with #6 x 5/8" OH SMS along with 1/4-20 x 2-1/4" thru bolts and finish washers sized for a standard 1-3/4 inch door, so it covers both the surface-screw and through-bolt approach out of the box. If your door is other than 1-3/4 inch thick, the bolt length has to be called out either way.
7) Is the Rockwood 106x70C pull plate suitable for residential doors or is it commercial only?
It is a commercial grade part, built to ANSI A156.6 J405 in stainless steel and used on institutional buildings, offices, retail, education, detention, sports facilities, hotels, and restaurants.
