Rockwood 619 STNN – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Rockwood 619 door viewer fit a standard 1-3/4 inch entry door?
No. The Rockwood 619 is built for doors 11/16 inch to 1-1/16 inch thick, which is well under the 1-3/4 inch thickness of a standard commercial door or the 1-3/8 inch of a common interior door. Run it on thin panel or lightweight doors only. For a normal entry door at 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches, the Trimco 975 covers the same 160 degree view over a 1-17/64 inch to 2-1/8 inch thickness range, and the Hager 1759 spans 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/8 inches.
2) What size hole do I drill for a Rockwood 619 peephole?
A 1/2 inch hole. Bore it through at eye height on a door between 11/16 and 1-1/16 inch thick, then thread the two halves together from each face. No other prep and no mounting screws are involved.
3) I am replacing an old peephole. Will the Rockwood 619 cover the existing hole?
Only if the old bore is 1/2 inch or smaller. The 619 is sized to a 1/2 inch hole, so it will not fill a larger opening. Plenty of viewers use a bigger bore, the Emtek 2610 for one, which takes a 5/8 inch hole. Measure the hole before you order, and if it is already 5/8 inch, pick a viewer sized to that bore rather than trying to bush down to the 619.
4) What door viewer do I need for a labeled fire door?
Not the Rockwood 619. It is made for doors 11/16 to 1-1/16 inch thick, and a labeled fire door is normally 1-3/4 inches, so it is the wrong part on that opening before the label even comes into it. Specify a fire rated viewer instead: the Ives U700, the Ives U696 at 150 degrees, or the Ives U698 at 190 degrees are all UL fire rated one-way viewers.
5) What door viewer keeps the 160 degree viewing angle of the Rockwood 619 but fits a door thicker than 1-1/16 inch?
The Trimco 975 is also a 160 degree door viewer, and its door thickness range runs 1-17/64 inch to 2-1/8 inch. The Rockwood 619 is built for doors 11/16 inch to 1-1/16 inch thick, so the two cover different thickness bands at the same field of view. If the opening measures thicker than 1-1/16 inch and the 160 degree view is what you want to hold onto across the building, the 975 is the direct match on viewing angle.
6) I need a door viewer for a fire rated door - which ones carry a fire rating?
Four Ives viewers carry a fire rating: the 701, the U696, the U698 and the U700. The 701 is a one-way brass viewer with a 120 degree viewing angle built for thicker doors, the U696 gives a 150 degree one-way view, the U698 is a wide angle one-way viewer at 190 degrees with UL fire rating, and the U700 is a one-way brass viewer with UL fire rating. Hager's 1756 is a 185 degree one-way viewer with a fire rating as well. What separates them from each other is viewing angle and body material, not the rating itself.
7) Is a 160 degree door viewer wide enough, or should I get a 200 degree one?
160 degrees, which is what the Rockwood 619 gives you, shows the landing and most of what is standing to either side of the door. Go wider if you need to see someone pressed flat against the wall beside the frame or a package left tight to the threshold. The Trimco 976 and the Trimco 977 both open that up to 200 degrees, the Cal-Royal PRIULDV200 is 200 degrees with a privacy cover, and the Ives U698 sits between at 190 degrees. The wider lens fisheyes more at the edges, so faces read smaller.
8) Does the Rockwood 619 viewer have a cover the tenant can close from inside?
The 619 is a plain two-piece brass viewer, lens and barrel, with nothing to shut over it. If your tenants want the lens blocked when they are not using it, the Cal-Royal PRIULDV200 carries a privacy cover behind a 200 degree lens, and the Hager 1759 uses a privacy flap with a 185 degree lens over a 1-3/8 to 2-1/8 inch door.
9) Which door viewer should I order for a thick door, two inches or more?
The Hager 1756 is listed at 2-1/8 inch door thickness and is a 185 degree one-way viewer with a fire rating. The Hager 1759 spans 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/8 inch at the same 185 degrees, with a privacy flap. Trimco's 975, 976 and 977 all run up to 2-1/8 inch, at 160 degrees, 200 degrees, and 200 degrees with a heavy duty cover respectively. Ives lists the 701 as a one-way brass viewer for thicker doors with a 120 degree viewing angle and a fire rating. The Rockwood 619 is built at the other end of the scale, for 11/16 inch to 1-1/16 inch doors.
10) Can an Emtek 2610 go into the same hole as a Rockwood 619?
Not without changing the bore. The Rockwood 619 installs in a 1/2 inch drilled hole, and the Emtek 2610 is a solid brass door viewer that takes a 5/8 inch diameter hole. Swapping a 619 out for a 2610 means opening the existing hole up to 5/8 inch, which is a straightforward pass with the larger bit. Going the other direction, a 5/8 inch bore left behind by a 2610 is wider than the 619's barrel, so the 619 is not a drop-in for it. Confirm the hole you already have before ordering either one.
11) What finishes does the Rockwood 619 door viewer come in?
Three: antique brass, bright chrome (BHMA 625), and satin nickel (BHMA 619). Bright chrome and satin nickel are the two that match most modern lever and lockset finishes on a unit door, and antique brass is the one to pick when the rest of the door hardware is aged or oil-rubbed brass. All three are the same brass viewer underneath.
12) Why does the Rockwood 619 have 619 listed as a finish too?
Two different numbers that happen to match. 619 is the model number of the Rockwood viewer itself, and 619 is also the BHMA finish code for satin nickel, which is one of the three finish choices on it. Ordering the 619 in 619 means the satin nickel version. The other two are 625 bright chrome and antique brass.
13) Does the Rockwood 619 meet ANSI/BHMA for a hardware schedule?
It meets ANSI/BHMA A156.16, the auxiliary hardware standard, under types L03222 and L03172, which is the line a spec writer needs on the schedule. Note that the 619 is a residential-duty viewer for doors 11/16 to 1-1/16 inch thick, so it belongs on thin interior or unit doors rather than on a heavy commercial opening.
14) What is the difference between the Trimco 976 and the Trimco 977 door viewers?
Both are 200 degree door viewers and both fit doors 1-17/64 inch to 2-1/8 inch thick. The 977 comes with a heavy duty cover; the 976 is the viewer on its own. Trimco keeps them as separate series, 976 Series and 977U Series, so the part numbers are not interchangeable when you are matching what is already installed across a building.
15) Which other door viewers are brass like the Rockwood 619?
The Rockwood 619 is a brass viewer. The Emtek 2610 is a solid brass door viewer that installs in a 5/8 inch diameter hole. Ives offers two brass one-way viewers: the 701, a 120 degree viewer for thicker doors with a fire rating, and the U700, which carries a UL fire rating. If a facility standard calls for brass throughout the openings, those are the parts to compare against each other on thickness range and viewing angle.
