Rockwood BF157 US26D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What door thickness does the Rockwood BF157 mount to, and what if my doors are thicker?
Standard fasteners are 1/4-20 x 2-1/4 inch thru bolts with finish washers, sized for a 1-3/4 inch door, which is the usual commercial thickness. On anything other than 1-3/4 inches, the bolt length has to be specified at order time, so state your actual door thickness when you order. Thru bolting means you need access to both faces of the door, or you order the concealed mounting version instead.
2) Does the Rockwood BF157 meet a hardware standard I can put on a spec?
It carries ANSI A156.6, J402. That is the door pull entry a specifier or institutional buyer needs on the submittal, and it is what lets the BF157 go on a schedule for a school, hospital, or government facility rather than being taken on the description alone.
3) I need pulls on both sides of the door. How do I order the BF157 back to back?
Back to back pairs use the BTB suffix plus the mounting type number, written like BF156BTB16. A single pull with no visible fasteners on the opposite face uses the C suffix with the mounting type number, as in BF156C17. Heavy duty versions of most fastening types add HD on the end of the fastening type number. So the mounting number is a separate decision from the pull itself, and it has to be on the order.
4) Will a Rockwood BF157 drop into my existing pull holes?
Only if those holes are on 10 inch centers, which is the BF157 hole spacing. If the door is already drilled to a different pattern, you are either plugging and redrilling or going to a pull with adjustable length, such as the ABH AB3330 offset round end pull, which is offered with custom length options. Because the BF157 thru bolts through the door, both faces have to be accessible unless you order the concealed C mounting.
5) Can I use a straight door pull instead of the Rockwood BF157 offset pull?
A straight pull is the simpler option when nothing about the opening requires the grip to be carried away from the face on an offset arm. The Rockwood BF157 uses a 90-degree offset with a 3-1/2 inch projection and 2-1/2 inch clearance. Straight commercial alternatives include the Ives 8102HD heavy duty straight pull with a 3/4 inch round bar and 1-1/2 inch clearance, the Ives 8103HD heavy duty straight pull in 1 inch round with through bolt mounting, and the ABH AB3300 straight flat end pull handle in 1.00 inch diameter. Note the clearance difference: the 8102HD provides 1-1/2 inch behind the bar against 2-1/2 inch on the BF157, so hand room and glove clearance change with the swap.
6) What is the closest equivalent to a Rockwood BF157 offset door pull from another manufacturer?
The BF157 is a 90-degree offset pull on 10 inch center-to-center with a 3-1/2 inch projection and 2-1/2 inch clearance, built to ANSI A156.6, J402 for commercial openings. The nearest cross-brand equivalents are offset pulls of the same family: the ABH AB3310 offset flat end door pull, a commercial grade surface mount unit, and the Ives 8169 C style offset solid door pull in 1 inch diameter with heavy duty mounting. If a round end profile is preferred over the flat end, the ABH AB3330 offset round end pull is offered with custom length options. Match the offset geometry and the center-to-center first, since that is what sets where a hand lands relative to the door edge.
7) What is the difference between a 90-degree offset door pull and a 45-degree offset pull?
Both hold the grip away from the door face; the angle changes how the arm approaches it. The Rockwood BF157 is a 90-degree offset with a 3-1/2 inch projection and 2-1/2 inch clearance behind the grip, which is why it is recommended for ADA openings. The Ives 8145 is a 45-degree offset door pull in the ADA compliant EZ series, supplied with heavy duty mounting hardware. The 45-degree arm angles back toward the door rather than turning square, giving a diagonal pull line; the 90-degree returns perpendicular and keeps the whole grip parallel to the door edge. On a glass front or a narrow stile, confirm which one the drawing calls out, because the two are not interchangeable in appearance even where either would function.
8) What offset pull should I use on a door thinner than 1-3/4 inches?
The Rockwood BF157 ships with 1/4 - 20 x 2-1/4 inch thru bolts and finish washers sized for a standard 1-3/4 inch door, and the fastening has to be specified differently when the door is another thickness. For a thin door, the Deltana OHP620 off-set handle pull is supplied as a back-to-back set with a stated door thickness range of 1-1/8 inch to 1-3/8 inch, so it covers the thinner leaf directly out of the carton. Measure the leaf before ordering either one, since on a through-bolted pull the fastener length is what decides whether the set draws up tight.
9) How much room does a Rockwood BF157 pull stick out from the door?
Projection is 3-1/2 inches off the door face, with 2-1/2 inches of that being open grip clearance. That matters in a corridor or vestibule where the door swings toward a wall or a second leaf, and it matters for the 10 inch center-to-center hole pattern you drill for it.
10) What material and finish options does the Rockwood BF157 come in?
Bodies are made in aluminum, brass, bronze, or stainless steel, and there are eight finishes: 313 dark bronze anodized aluminum, 315 black anodized aluminum, 605 bright brass, 612 satin bronze clear coated, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 628 satin aluminum clear anodized, and 630 satin stainless steel. For matching existing openings in a building, 630 and 626 are the two that typically line up with commercial lever and exit device hardware already installed.
11) Does the Rockwood BF157 door pull come with mounting hardware?
Standard supply is 1/4-20 x 2-1/4 inch thru bolts with finish washers, sized for a 1-3/4 inch door. That is the whole fastening package for a single surface mounted pull. What is not automatic is the mounting type number, which pairs with the BTB, C, or HD suffix depending on whether you are doing back to back pulls, concealed fasteners, or heavy duty, and it has to be called out on the order.
12) Will a Cal-Royal PUL-175 work in place of a Rockwood BF157 pull?
They are not the same part. The Cal-Royal PUL-175 is a night latch cylinder pull, 3-1/2 inches high, in stainless steel construction, meaning it is a small pull built around a cylinder opening on a night latch application. The BF157 is a 90-degree offset door pull on 10 inch center-to-center with a 3-1/2 inch projection, through bolted with 1/4 - 20 x 2-1/4 inch fasteners on a 1-3/4 inch door. A cylinder pull will not cover the through-bolt hole pattern of the BF157 and does not provide the same grip length, so it is a replacement only where the door actually carries a night latch cylinder.
13) Is a push plate a substitute for the Rockwood BF157 door pull?
No. The BF157 is a graspable offset pull on 10 inch center-to-center that a hand closes around to draw the door open. A push plate is a flat plate the hand pushes flat against, with no grip: the Trimco 1001-1 heavy duty push plate measures 3 inches by 12 inches, and the Trimco 1041 half-round push plate measures 8 inches by 16 inches. The two are commonly ordered together on a single opening, plate on the push side and pull on the pull side. If the opening pulls toward the user, the plate cannot do the job. The Trimco 1070 series classic push/pull plates at 3-1/2 inches by 15 inches combine both functions on one plate where a smaller grip is acceptable.
14) Which offset pull should I order for a pair of doors that need matching pulls on both faces?
The Rockwood BF157 is ordered as a single pull, with back to back mounting in pairs called out by adding the BTB suffix and the mounting type number, and concealed mounting for single pulls called out with the C suffix and the mounting type number. If a factory back-to-back set is preferred over a suffix build, the Deltana SSPOBB24 is a 24 inch back-to-back modern offset door pull set and the Deltana SSPORBB24 is the 24 inch back-to-back round offset version. The Rockwood route keeps the 10 inch center-to-center and 3-1/2 inch projection of the BF157 on both faces; the Deltana sets are a longer 24 inch pull, which changes the look on the leaf.
15) What offset pull holds up on a high-traffic restroom or institutional door?
The Rockwood BF157 is a commercial offset pull built to ANSI A156.6, J402, and heavy duty versions of most fastening types are available by adding the HD suffix to the fastening type number, which is the specification to use on doors that see constant traffic. Cross-brand heavy duty options in the same role include the Ives 8169 C style offset solid door pull at 1 inch diameter with heavy duty mounting, the Ives 8103HD heavy duty straight pull with through bolt mounting, and the Trimco 1035 ultimate restroom pull, a heavy duty restroom-specific pull. On any of these, the fastening method matters as much as the pull itself: through bolting carries the load into the door rather than into surface screws.
16) Is the Rockwood BF157 tough enough for a high traffic commercial entrance?
It is a commercial rated pull built in aluminum, brass, bronze, or stainless steel and mounted with 1/4-20 thru bolts, which carry pull loads through the door rather than into sheet metal or a wood screw. For heavier abuse, Rockwood offers heavy duty versions of most fastening types under the HD suffix. On a stainless door in a hospital or school corridor, 630 satin stainless steel is the finish that hides handling wear best.
17) Is there a stainless steel alternative to the Rockwood BF157 for a corrosive or wash-down area?
The BF157 is offered in aluminum, brass, bronze and stainless steel, including the 630 satin stainless steel finish, so it can be specified in stainless directly. If a solid stainless pull is the requirement, the ABH AB7200 is a solid stainless steel flat end pull handle at 7/8 inch diameter with through-bolt mounting, and the Cal-Royal PUL-175 is stainless steel construction. The AB7200 is a straight flat end pull rather than a 90-degree offset, so it does not reproduce the 3-1/2 inch projection and 2-1/2 inch clearance of the BF157; choose it when the material matters more than the offset geometry.
18) What should I use instead of the Rockwood BF157 if I need a longer pull than 10 inches?
The BF157 is a 90-degree offset pull on 10 inch center-to-center. For a longer grip, the ABH AB3330 offset round end pull is offered with custom length options, the Deltana SSPOBB24 and SSPORBB24 are 24 inch back-to-back offset sets in modern and round profiles, and the Deltana SSP1210 is a 12 inch contemporary pull for a single side. Longer pulls are common on glass front and full-height entrance doors where the grip needs to span more of the stile; on a standard commercial leaf the 10 inch center-to-center of the BF157 is the more typical call, and the projection and clearance are what govern hand room rather than the length.
