Rockwood ROC-TBF157-US32D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Rockwood TBF157 door pull meet ADA requirements for an accessible opening?
The TBF157 is a barrier free pull recommended for ADA openings, and it conforms to ANSI A156.6, type J402. The 90 degree offset shape with 2-1/2 inch clearance behind the grip is what makes it usable with a closed fist or a loose grip, which is the practical requirement on an accessible door.
2) Will the Rockwood TBF157 pull mount on a 1-3/4 inch commercial door as supplied?
Yes. The TBF157 ships with 1/4-20 x 2-1/4 inch thru bolts and finish washers sized for a standard 1-3/4 inch door. Any other door thickness has to be called out when ordering so the correct bolt length comes with it.
3) Can the Rockwood TBF157 be mounted back to back with a pull on the other side of the door?
Yes, but it has to be ordered that way. Back to back pairs use the BTB suffix plus the mounting type number, and a single pull with concealed fasteners uses the C suffix plus the mounting type number. Standard duty mounting is 1/4-20. If you order the plain TBF157 you get thru bolt mounting with finish washers showing on the reverse face.
4) I do not need the offset - what straight pull should I use instead?
The Rockwood TBF157 is an offset hung tubular pull with a 2-1/2 inch clearance. For a straight bar instead, the Ives 8102HD is a heavy duty straight pull with a 3/4 inch round bar and 1-1/2 inch clearance, and the Ives 8103HD is a heavy duty straight pull in 1 inch round with through bolt mounting. The ABH AB3300 is a straight flat end pull in 1.00 inch diameter. Straight pulls sit closer to the door face, so verify knuckle clearance for gloved hands.
5) The Rockwood TBF157 is for a 1-3/4 inch door - what offset pull suits a thinner door?
The Rockwood TBF157 ships with 1/4-20 x 2-1/4 inch thru bolts and finish washers sized for a standard 1-3/4 inch door. For thinner leaves, the Deltana OHP620 off-set handle pull is a back-to-back set specified for 1-1/8 inch to 1-3/8 inch door thickness, and the Sure-Loc PL-1SQ square long pull is a single-sided pull for 1/2 inch to 2-1/4 inch thick doors.
6) How much room does a Rockwood TBF157 offset pull need in front of the door?
Allow 3-1/2 inches of projection off the door face, with 2-1/2 inches of clear hand space between the grip and the door. That projection matters where a pull sits near a side wall, a return, or a second leaf, so check the swing path before you set it.
7) Will the thru bolts on the TBF157 interfere with an exit device or lock on the same door?
They can. The TBF157 bolts straight through the door at 10 inch centers, so the bolt line has to miss the chassis, rods, or case of anything already in the door. Where that clash is unavoidable, order the concealed mounting version with the C suffix, which does not require a through hole to the opposite face.
8) Should I use a 90 degree offset pull like the TBF157 or a 45 degree offset pull?
A 90 degree offset like the TBF157 brings the grip parallel to the door face with 2-1/2 inches of hand clearance, which suits a straight pulling motion on an accessible door. A 45 degree offset, such as the Ives 8145EZ, angles the grip instead and is the usual pick where the hand approaches the pull from below or where a shallower projection is wanted. The TBF157 stands off 3-1/2 inches from the face.
9) Do I need to order a push plate to go with the Rockwood TBF157 on a push-pull opening?
On a swinging door with no lockset, yes, you pair the pull on the pull side with a push plate on the push side. The TBF157 comes as the pull only. Trimco makes the 1001-1 heavy duty push plate at 3 by 12 inches, the 1041 half round push plate at 8 by 16 inches, and the 1070 Series classic push/pull plates at 3-1/2 by 15 inches.
10) I need a back-to-back pull set rather than a single Rockwood TBF157 pull - what are my options?
The Rockwood TBF157 can be ordered back to back in pairs using the BTB suffix with a mounting type number. If you would rather buy a set as one item, the Deltana SSPOBB24 is a 24 inch back-to-back modern offset pull, the Deltana SSPORBB24 is a 24 inch back-to-back round offset pull, and the Sure-Loc PL-2KN is a double-sided knurled long pull. These are longer grips than the 10 inch center-to-center on the TBF157.
11) What looks like a substitute for the Rockwood TBF157 but will not work on an ADA door pull application?
The Rockwood TBF157 is an offset door pull built to ANSI A156.6, J402 and recommended for ADA openings. A few items sit nearby but do not do the same job: the Trimco 1001-1 is a 3 inch by 12 inch heavy duty push plate with no grip at all, the Trimco 1041 is an 8 inch by 16 inch half-round push plate, and the Cal-Royal PUL-175 is a 3-1/2 inch night latch cylinder pull, which is a small cylinder-mounted pull rather than a full-length door pull. Only the Trimco 1070 series combines a push plate and pull plate.
12) The Rockwood TBF157 uses thru bolts - is there an offset or long pull with concealed mounting?
The Rockwood TBF157 ships standard with 1/4-20 x 2-1/4 inch thru bolts and finish washers, and concealed mounting is available on single pulls by adding the C suffix with a mounting type number. If you want concealed mounting from another maker, the Sure-Loc PL-1RD round long pull is offered with concealed or thru-bolt mounting. The ABH AB7200 solid stainless steel flat end pull, 7/8 inch diameter, is through-bolt mounted.
13) Is the Rockwood TBF157 handed, or does one part work on both left and right hand doors?
The TBF157 is a symmetrical 90 degree offset tubular pull mounted on 10 inch centers, so one part works on either hand. What you do need to decide is vertical or horizontal mounting and which face it goes on, since the thru bolt holes are drilled to suit.
14) For a restroom door, is the Rockwood TBF157 the right pull or is there something more specific?
The Rockwood TBF157 is a commercial offset pull recommended for ADA openings, with a 2-1/2 inch clearance for a gloved or closed-fist grip. If you want a pull designed specifically for restroom use, the Trimco 1035 Ultimate Restroom Pull is a heavy duty restroom pull. The Sure-Loc PL-1KN knurled long pull, single-sided with thru-bolt mounting, is another grip option where a textured surface is preferred.
