Rockwood ROC-BF97-US32D – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What makes the Rockwood BF97 a barrier free flush pull instead of an ordinary flush cup pull?
The BF97 is Rockwood's ADA flush pull, and the difference is how a person operates it. A conventional cup is a shallow recess you hook fingertips into, which takes pinching and real grip strength. The BF97's recess runs 7/8 inch deep, so the door can be worked with the side of a hand rather than fingertips. That matters because accessible openings are judged on whether the operable part can be used without tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist. Built in stainless steel, satin 630.
2) Does the Rockwood BF97 meet an ANSI/BHMA A156.6 J403 callout on a hardware schedule?
It does. The BF97 answers to ANSI A156.6, J403, so it drops straight into a schedule written to that designation without a substitution request. A156.6 is the BHMA standard covering architectural door trim, the family that includes pulls and push plates, and J403 is the specific type line. If the spec sheet reads J403 in 630, this is that part in stainless steel.
3) Can the Rockwood BF97 flush pull be ordered with tamper-resistant screws for a detention or behavioral health opening?
There is a TORX option that replaces the standard #8 x 3/4 inch flat head sheet metal screws with security Torx heads, which is what you want anywhere a resident or an inmate has unsupervised access to the hardware. Draw the line carefully, though: tamper resistant is not the same as ligature resistant. If the opening genuinely needs ligature resistance, that is a different part, and ABH's 1911 Series flush door pull is built with a ligature-resistant design. The BF97 is not sold on that basis.
4) Will the Rockwood BF97 work as pocket door hardware for a passage or dummy application?
The Rockwood BF97 is a plain recessed pull for commercial openings, mortised into the door face and held with #8 x 3/4 inch flat head sheet metal screws. It supplies the grip and nothing else. When the pocket door needs hardware sold specifically for passage and dummy duty, the Baldwin Estate 8601 pocket door pull covers those applications in the Estate Series. Match the choice to the opening: the BF97 for a commercial door that only needs a barrier free pull, the Baldwin 8601 where the pocket door hardware itself has to serve a passage or dummy function.
5) What screws does the Rockwood BF97 flush pull mount with, and what do they need to bite into?
#8 x 3/4 inch flat head sheet metal screws. Flat heads countersink into the face of the pull so nothing stands proud inside the recess to catch a hand or a passing leaf. The 3/4 inch length is the part to think about on the job: you need sound material in the walls of the mortise for the threads to hold, so on a hollow metal door or a light core wood door, lay the cut out where there is backing rather than dead space.
6) Our hardware schedule calls for 630 but the Rockwood BF97 is listed as US32D. Are those the same finish?
Same finish, two naming conventions. US32D is the older US finish code and 630 is the BHMA number for satin stainless steel, and the BF97 comes in that one finish. It will sit correctly next to satin stainless push plates, pulls, and hinges already hung in the building. What it will not match is 626, satin chrome on brass, which photographs almost identically but is a plated finish over a different base metal, so a run of 626 openings and this pull will read differently side by side under real light.
7) When do I need a flush pull like the BF97 instead of a regular surface-mounted door pull?
Any time the door has to pass something. Sliding doors, pocket doors, and barn doors travel past a wall face or another leaf, and a surface pull would strike it. The BF97 mortises in so nothing projects off the face. Same reasoning on a leaf that swings flat against equipment or into a tight corridor. If nothing passes the door, a surface pull is the easier install, because it screws to the face and does not need a routed pocket cut and cleaned out first.
8) For a pocket door, do I need anything besides a flush pull on each face?
Plan on one pull per face so the leaf works from either side. The gap most people hit is getting the door back out once it has run fully into the pocket, because a flush cup leaves nothing to grip on the edge. A ring type covers that: Trimco's 1066/1067/1068 drop-ring flush pulls sit flush and the ring lifts out when you need something to hook. Worth knowing the trade-off, a drop ring has to be pinched and pulled, which is exactly the motion the BF97's barrier free profile is there to avoid, so on an accessible opening keep the primary operating pull barrier free.
9) What other flush pulls could I use instead of the Rockwood BF97?
Depends what the opening actually needs. Trimco's 1060/1061 flush cup pulls and the 1111 Series large flush cup pulls are conventional recessed cups. The Trimco 1059 is a drive-in cup, installed without exposed fasteners. Orca Hardware's round flush pull is 2-1/8 inches in diameter, a small-format pull for light doors and casework rather than a full door pull. Baldwin's Estate 8601 is the decorative residential pocket door option. Where the BF97 stays the specification is when accessibility is on the drawing, since Rockwood builds it as the ADA pull in stainless with an ANSI A156.6, J403 designation.
10) Is a stainless flush pull the right choice for a locker room, kitchen, or pool building door?
The BF97 is stainless steel through the body, not plated brass or zinc, so the surface you are looking at is the metal itself rather than a coating that can wear through or blister in a humid, chemically washed room. The satin 630 finish also carries fingerprints and traffic marks better than a bright finish on a door people put a hand on every few minutes, which is the practical reason satin stainless ends up on institutional and food service openings.
11) Does the Rockwood BF97 flush pull screw in, or is it a drive-in pull?
Screws. The BF97 fastens into the routed pocket with #8 x 3/4 inch flat head sheet metal screws, so the heads show in the face of the cup. If you want no visible fasteners at all, Trimco's 1059 is a drive-in flush cup pull. Drive-in cups move faster across a run of doors, but they want a clean, consistently sized bore and they are far less forgiving if a pull has to come back out and be reset.
