Center-to-center on the R116EDPL is 7-1/2 inches. That is the number to check against the pull side of your opening before you drill, since the plate mounts with thru bolts and the holes have to land clear of the device chassis and any existing prep.
2) Is the R116EDPL thru bolted or does it screw into the door?
Thru bolted. The R116EDPL ships with 1/4-20 thru bolts and finish washers, so it clamps through the door rather than relying on wood or sheet metal screws into the face. That is what you want on an abused opening, since the whole point of the plate is to take the hit that would otherwise land on the exit device, and screws into a hollow metal skin pull out.
3) What does an exit device protector actually do, and do I need one on my exit doors?
It is a formed stainless guard that mounts over the exit device on the door face and takes the abuse instead of the device. Carts, dollies, gurneys and propped doors are what kill panic hardware, and replacing a device costs far more than a plate. The R116EDPL is a commercial-duty part, typical on schools, hospitals, service corridors and back-of-house doors where traffic is hard on hardware. It does not change how the device operates and it is not a lock or a latch guard.
4) What finish does the Rockwood R116EDPL exit device protector come in?
One finish only: 630, satin stainless steel, which is the same thing as US32D. The plate is solid stainless steel, so it matches the satin stainless pulls, push plates and kick plates already on most institutional and commercial openings without a special order.
