ROFU 1404-08 US28 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the ROFU 1404 electric strike work with my latchbolt projection?
The 1404 keeper takes up to 5/8 inch latch projection, and with 1/8 inch door-to-frame clearance it will handle 3/4 inch. If your lockset throws more than that, it is the wrong strike. A 3/4 inch Pullman latch on a rim device is a different animal, that is what something like the SDC 30-4 rim mount strike is built for.
2) Does the ROFU 1404 come in a left hand and right hand version?
No handing to specify. The 1404 is reversible and non-handed, so the same unit works on either swing. Order finish and voltage only.
3) What happens to the ROFU 1404 strike when power is lost?
It stays locked. Fail-secure means the keeper holds when power drops, and the door is still openable from the inside by turning the lever or pushing the exit device, since the strike never affects egress on the pull side. If your opening needs to release and open freely on power failure, you need a fail-safe unit instead, for example the Hager 2925 or 2928, which are field reversible between fail safe and fail secure.
4) What size cutout does the ROFU 1404 faceplate need in the jamb?
The faceplate measures 1-7/16 by 7-15/16 inches, so the jamb has to be prepped for that footprint. That is longer than the common 4-7/8 by 1-1/4 inch ANSI strike prep, so it is not a drop-in swap for an ANSI-prepped frame. If you are replacing into an existing ANSI cutout, look at a unit built to that prep such as the Dortronics 3300 Series or the Adams Rite 7170.
5) Can the ROFU 1404 be installed in an aluminum storefront jamb as well as hollow metal?
Yes. The 1404 uses an anodized aluminum faceplate suited to hollow metal, aluminum, or wood frames, so one part number covers all three frame types on a mixed building.
6) What voltage do I order the ROFU 1404 in, and can I run it off my existing power supply?
Three voltage builds are offered: 8-16 VAC/3-6 VDC, 12 VAC/VDC, and 24 VAC/VDC. The 8-16 VAC version is the one to pick when the strike is buzzing off an existing doorbell style transformer. For an access control panel, match the panel output, 12 or 24. Voltage is fixed at time of order, so pick it against your supply.
7) I need latch monitoring with the ROFU 1404. What options give me that?
The ROFU 1404 is a fail-secure strike with a reversible non-handed keeper and does not include a monitoring switch. If your access control needs door or latch status back at the panel, the Dortronics 3300 Series includes a latch bolt sensing switch and runs 12/24VDC, the Hager 2945 is a fire rated rim exit strike with a latchbolt monitor, and the Camden CX-ED1799L-8 is a Grade 1 dual monitor strike supplied with eight faceplates.
8) What is the closest equivalent to the ROFU 1404 electric strike from another brand?
The ROFU 1404 is a fail-secure electric strike for hollow metal, aluminum or wood frames that accepts up to a 5/8 inch latch projection. The closest peers on the same basis are the Trine 004, an 8-16VAC fail-secure strike with a 6-1/4 inch x 1-3/8 inch faceplate rated for up to 5/8 inch throw, and the SDC 15 Series, a 5/8 inch latchbolt strike running 12/24 VDC. The ROFU 1404 faceplate measures 1-7/16 inch x 7-15/16 inch, so confirm your existing jamb cutout before treating any of these as a drop-in.
9) My jamb is prepped for a standard 4-7/8 inch ANSI strike. Does the ROFU 1404 fit, or do I need something else?
The ROFU 1404 faceplate is 1-7/16 inch x 7-15/16 inch, which is longer than a 4-7/8 inch ANSI prep and will require the jamb to be cut to suit. For an existing ANSI 4-7/8 inch x 1-1/4 inch prep, the Dortronics 3300 Series ships with a strike plate for ANSI prep in that size, the Adams Rite 7170 is built for hollow metal and wood jambs with a 1-1/4 inch x 4-7/8 inch faceplate, and the Von Duprin 4211 covers cylindrical locks in the same class of opening.
10) Will the ROFU 1404 work with a rim exit device or a mortise lock?
The ROFU 1404 accepts a maximum 5/8 inch latch projection with 3/4 inch of door and frame clearance at 1/8 inch, which suits typical cylindrical latches rather than exit device or mortise hardware. For a rim exit device with a 3/4 inch Pullman latchbolt, the SDC 30-4 Series is a rim mount strike in stainless steel, and the HES Folger Adam 310-4-2 is a complete strike pac for surface vertical rods. For mortise locks, the Securitron MUNL is a Grade 1 fire rated mortise unlatch strike and the Von Duprin 6210 is a 24 VDC fail-secure mortise strike with UL 10C fire rating.
11) What looks like a substitute for the ROFU 1404 but is not?
Two things to watch. The HES 1500 and HES 1600 items are electric strike accessories for those Grade 1 series, not complete strike bodies, so they will not replace a ROFU 1404 on their own. And the SDC 25 Series is built around 1/2 inch latchbolt compatibility, while the ROFU 1404 is set up for a maximum 5/8 inch latch projection, so the keeper depth does not line up with the same latch.
12) What finishes does the ROFU 1404 electric strike come in?
Three: 628 clear anodized, 613 oil rubbed bronze, and 606 satin brass. All three are offered in each of the three voltage builds, so you can match the storefront or the existing door hardware without giving up your voltage choice. Clear anodized is the usual match for aluminum storefront.
13) I am replacing a strike on a narrow aluminum storefront jamb. Is the ROFU 1404 the right choice?
The ROFU 1404 has an anodized aluminum faceplate suitable for hollow metal, aluminum or wood frames, but its 7-15/16 inch faceplate length is long for a tight storefront prep. For aluminum jambs specifically, the Adams Rite 7100 Series and 7160 are made for aluminum jambs with a 1-1/4 inch x 4-7/8 inch flat faceplate, which matches the narrower prep typical of storefront work.
14) The ROFU 1404 requires cutting the frame. Is there a no-cut option?
The ROFU 1404 uses a 1-7/16 inch x 7-15/16 inch faceplate that has to be mortised into the jamb. If you are retrofitting an occupied opening and want to avoid frame work, the Locknetics NC450 is a no cut electric strike in US32D. The Camden CX-ED1689L-4 is a fire rated low profile universal strike supplied with four faceplates, which helps when the existing prep is an unknown.
15) The ROFU 1404 comes in 606, 613 and 628 finishes. What if I need satin stainless to match the rest of the doors?
The ROFU 1404 is offered in 613 oil rubbed bronze, 628 clear anodized and 606 satin brass across its 8-16 VAC/3-6 VDC, 12 VAC/VDC and 24 VAC/VDC voltages. If the building standard is satin stainless, the Locknetics CS450-32D, MDS100 US32D and MS100 US32D are supplied in that finish, as is the Von Duprin 6400 32D in satin stainless steel.
16) Is there a lighter duty or economy strike if the ROFU 1404 is more than my opening needs?
The ROFU 1404 is a commercial fail-secure strike with a reversible non-handed keeper. For a lower traffic interior door, the Trine 001 Series is a fail-secure light commercial strike with a 5-7/8 inch x 1-1/4 inch faceplate, and the RCI 15BS is an economy fail-secure strike intended for a special offset latch entry.
17) I have a pair of doors and need a strike at the inactive leaf. Does the ROFU 1404 cover that?
The ROFU 1404 is a single fail-secure strike with a 5/8 inch maximum latch projection and a 1-7/16 inch x 7-15/16 inch faceplate, intended for a standard single opening. For a double door application, the Rockwood electric strike is built for double doors with a 3/4 keeper and is a Grade 1 fire rated 310-1 Series unit.
18) I want one strike model I can standardize on across mixed frame types and preps. What are my options next to the ROFU 1404?
The ROFU 1404 already spans hollow metal, aluminum and wood frames with a single reversible non-handed body, and is ordered in three finishes across 8-16 VAC/3-6 VDC, 12 VAC/VDC and 24 VAC/VDC. If you also need one part number to cover varied jamb preps, the Camden CX-ED1410 and CX-ED1420 are universal Grade 1 ANSI fire-rated strikes, and the Camden CX-ED1689L-4 ships with four faceplates in a fire rated low profile body.
19) Is the ROFU 1404 strike suitable for a commercial building or is it a residential part?
It is rated commercial. The 1404 is a commercial electric strike used on hollow metal, aluminum, and wood frame openings under an access control or intercom release.
