ROFU 1704 Electric Strike, Fail Secure, Faceplate Size 1-7/16" x 7-15/16"

The 1704 is a fail secure strike, so the keeper stays locked when power drops and the door remains secured. Access is granted only while the strike is energized. Free egress still comes from the lockset or exit device on the inside, since the strike only controls entry from the outside. If your code path or fire plan calls for the opening to release on power loss, this isn't the right unit; look at a field selectable model like the Hager 2930 or Hager 2945, both of which are field reversible between fail safe and fail secure.

Pick a different strike for a labeled opening. The 1704 is a commercial duty unit but a fire rated strike has to carry the rating on the part itself. From what we stock, the Von Duprin 6400 carries a 3-Hour UL 10C fire rating in fail secure and is Grade 1, the Von Duprin 6210 is UL 10C fire rated for mortise locks at 24 VDC fail secure, and the Camden CX-ED1410/CX-ED1420 is a Grade 1 ANSI fire rated universal strike. Any of those belongs on a rated opening instead.

The ROFU 1704 is a fail secure electric strike and its record does not carry a fire rating, so for a fire rated opening look at the Von Duprin 6210, a heavy duty Grade 1 fail secure strike for mortise locks at 24 VDC with a UL 10C fire rating, or the Von Duprin 6400 32D, a Grade 1 modular fail-secure strike for mortise or cylindrical locks with a 3-Hour UL 10C rating in satin stainless steel. Both hold fail secure operation like the 1704, so the lock stays locked when power drops and egress is by the lever.

The ROFU 1704 uses an anodized aluminum faceplate at 1-7/16 inch by 7-15/16 inch and is suited to hollow metal, aluminum or wood frames, so it does fit aluminum. Where the narrow stile jamb prep is the constraint, the Adams Rite 7100 Series and Adams Rite 7160 are built specifically for aluminum jambs with a 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch flat faceplate - a shorter, narrower plate than the 1704 carries. Neither Adams Rite carries a fire rating.

The ROFU 1704 keeper is adjustable for a maximum latch projection of 1/2 inch, with 3/4 inch depth possible at 1/8 inch door to frame clearance. For a 5/8 inch latchbolt, the SDC 15 Series is a 5/8 inch latchbolt strike with 12/24 VDC operation, the SDC 45F is a fire rated 5/8 inch latchbolt strike with a radius corner faceplate, and the Hager 2925 carries a 5/8 inch latch. The Trine 2001 at 16-24 VAC/DC is fail secure on a 5-7/8 inch by 1-1/4 inch faceplate and takes up to 5/8 inch. For a 3/4 inch pullman latch on a rim device, the SDC 30-4 Series is a rim mount stainless steel strike.

Both are fail secure strikes and both cover the 8-16 VAC range - the ROFU 1704 is ordered in an 8-16 VAC/3-6 VDC voltage along with 12 VAC/VDC, 24 VAC/VDC and 24 VDC. The Trine 8-16VAC strike is fire rated and uses a 6-1/4 inch by 1-3/8 inch faceplate, taking up to 5/8 inch throw. The ROFU 1704 faceplate is 1-7/16 inch by 7-15/16 inch and its keeper is adjustable to 1/2 inch max latch projection, so the frame cutout and the latch throw are the two things to check before swapping one for the other.

Two things get ordered by mistake against a ROFU 1704. The HES 1500 and HES 1600 items are electric strike accessories rather than a complete strike, so they do not replace a 1704 on their own, and the HES Folger Adam 310-1(X) is a strike body for 1/2 inch, 5/8 inch or 3/4 inch throw latchbolts. The HES Folger Adam 310-4-2 is a complete strike pac but it is built for surface vertical rods, not for the in-frame latch application the ROFU 1704 serves with its 1-7/16 inch by 7-15/16 inch faceplate and adjustable keeper.

The ROFU 1704 mounts into the frame behind a 1-7/16 inch by 7-15/16 inch anodized aluminum faceplate on hollow metal, aluminum or wood frames, which means a frame cutout to that plate size. Where cutting an existing frame is not on the table, the Locknetics NC450 US32D is a no cut electric strike, and the Camden CX-ED1689L-4 is a fire rated universal low profile strike supplied with 4 faceplates. The Locknetics CS450-32D is another strike in the CS Series to weigh against the retrofit.

The ROFU 1704 is a fail secure strike whose adjustable keeper handles up to 1/2 inch latch projection, so the deciding factor is the latch throw rather than the lock body style. Where the specification calls for a strike matched to the lock type, the Von Duprin 6210 is a fail-secure strike for mortise locks at 24 VDC, the Securitron MUNL Series is a Grade 1 fire rated mortise unlatch strike, and the Hager 2930 is a Grade 1 fire rated strike for cylindrical and mortise locks with 12/24 VDC dual voltage. For cylindrical locks specifically, the Adams Rite 7240 is fire rated for a 5/8 inch latchbolt projection.

No handing to specify. The 1704 is reversible and non handed, so one part number covers left and right hand openings. For a property manager stocking spares across a building, that means a single strike on the shelf covers every door in the group instead of two.

Neither is the 1704's job. It mounts in a door frame and releases a latch, so an outdoor gate wants a weather rated unit like the Camden CX-ED1959 Series outdoor rated gate strike. A pair of doors on surface vertical rods needs a top or bottom rod strike instead, such as the HES Folger Adam 310-4-2 complete strike pac for surface vertical rods, or the Rockwood double door strike with a 3/4 inch keeper.

Not on faceplate size. The 1704 plate is 1-7/16 by 7-15/16 inches, while the Trine 004 runs a 6-1/4 by 1-3/8 inch plate and the Trine 2001 a 5-7/8 by 1-1/4 inch plate, so the jamb cutout won't line up without rework. Function is comparable, both are fail secure and the Trine 004 runs 8-16 VAC like the 1704's low voltage build. If you're going into an unmodified existing Trine cutout, stay with the matching Trine plate size; if the jamb is being cut fresh, the 1704 is a fine fail secure choice.

The ROFU 1704 is a fail secure strike with an adjustable keeper and reversible, non handed operation; monitoring is not part of what it does. For a strike that reports latch position back to the access control panel, the Dortronics 3300 Series includes a latch bolt sensing switch at 12/24 VDC, the Hager 2945 is a fire rated rim exit strike with a latchbolt monitor, and the Camden CX-ED1799L-8 is a Grade 1 fire rated dual monitor strike.

The ROFU 1704 is reversible and non handed, so a single part covers both hands of door, and it is offered in 606 satin brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze and 628 clear anodized. Where the frames themselves vary, universal strikes ship with multiple faceplates: the Camden CX-ED1689L-4 is a fire rated universal low profile strike with 4 faceplates, and the Camden CX-ED1799L-8 is a Grade 1 fire rated dual monitor strike with 8 faceplates. The Camden CX-ED1410 and CX-ED1420 Series are universal Grade 1 ANSI fire-rated strikes, and the Von Duprin 6400 32D is a Grade 1 modular strike that handles mortise or cylindrical locks.

The ROFU 1704 keeper adjusts for a 1/2 inch max latch projection. The SDC 25 Series is a value electric strike with 1/2 inch latchbolt compatibility, which is the closest match on latch throw, and the SDC 15 Series is a value strike for a 5/8 inch latchbolt with 12/24 VDC operation if the latch is longer than the 1704 will take. Confirm the frame cutout against each faceplate before swapping, since the ROFU 1704 plate is 1-7/16 inch by 7-15/16 inch.

Three finishes: 606 satin brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, and 628 clear anodized. Every one of the four voltage options is built in all three, so you can match the strike to existing hardware without giving up the voltage you need. 628 clear anodized is the standard pairing for aluminum storefront jambs.
