ROFU 3402 Fail Safe Electric Strike, Hollow Metal/Aluminum/Wood Frame, Faceplate Size 1-1/4" x 4-7/8"

Fail-safe means the keeper unlocks when power is removed. Cut power to the ROFU 3402 and the door can be pushed open from the outside without a key. That is what you want on an egress or stairwell opening tied to fire alarm release, and it is exactly what you do not want on an exterior perimeter door, where a power loss would leave the building open. If the opening needs to stay locked when power drops, order a fail-secure strike instead, such as the Von Duprin 6210 or the SDC 15 Series.

The 3402 uses an anodized aluminum ANSI size faceplate measuring 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches, which is the standard ANSI prep. If your frame is already cut for a 4-7/8 inch ANSI strike, it drops into that prep. It is made for hollow metal, aluminum, or wood frames, so all three jamb types are covered by the same part.

Keeper depth is 3/4 inch, which takes a latch projecting up to 5/8 inch with 1/8 inch of door-to-frame clearance. Standard cylindrical and mortise latchbolts in that range work. The ROFU 3402 uses a 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inch anodized aluminum ANSI size faceplate suited to hollow metal, aluminum, or wood frames. The Adams Rite 7100 Series electric strike is built for aluminum jambs and carries a flat faceplate in the same 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inch size, and the Adams Rite 7160 uses that same faceplate size for aluminum jambs. If the frame is hollow metal or wood rather than aluminum, the Adams Rite 7170 is the version of that family prepped for hollow metal and wood jambs with the same 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inch faceplate. All three drop into the same ANSI cutout the 3402 uses, so an existing prep does not have to change.

The Dortronics 3300 Series adds a latch bolt sensing switch, runs 12/24VDC, and uses a strike plate for the same ANSI prep at 4-7/8 by 1-1/4 inches, so it fits the cutout the 3402 uses. The Hager 2945 is a fire rated rim exit strike with field selectable fail safe or fail secure and a latchbolt monitor, and the Camden CX-ED1799L-8 is a Grade 1 fire rated dual monitor strike supplied with eight faceplates.

The ROFU 3402 is built for DC and is ordered as either a 12 VDC or a 24 VDC unit. If the opening is fed AC, the Trine 004 runs on 8-16VAC and is fire rated with a 6-1/4 by 1-3/8 inch faceplate, and the Trine 2001 runs 16-24VAC/DC, is fire rated, and uses a 5-7/8 by 1-1/4 inch faceplate with up to a 5/8 inch throw, the same throw the 3402 accepts. Both are fail secure, and both faceplates are longer than the 4-7/8 inch ANSI plate on the 3402, so the frame prep changes with them.

No handing to specify. The 3402 is reversible and non-handed, so one part covers both left and right hand openings. For a property manager or integrator stocking spares across a building, that means a single strike on the shelf instead of two.

The 3402 is fail-safe only, decided at purchase. If you want the mode selectable on site, the Hager 2925 is field reversible fail safe/secure and takes a 5/8 inch latch, the same projection class as the ROFU. Hager 2928 offers the same field reversible operation, and the Trine EN430 is field selectable FS or FSE with a 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inch faceplate, so it matches the same ANSI prep.

The Securitron MUNL is a Grade 1 fire rated mortise unlatch strike. Note the Von Duprin 6210, 6400, and the 3402 differ in mode: those two are fail-secure while the 3402 is fail safe.
