ROFU 3460-09 US32D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What happens to the ROFU 3460 electric strike when power is lost?
The 3460 is fail-safe, so the keeper releases and the door unlocks when power drops. That makes it the wrong choice on any opening that has to stay secure during a power failure, and the right choice where egress or free access on power loss is the requirement. If you need the opposite behavior, look at a fail-secure strike such as the Von Duprin 6210 or the SDC 15 Series.
2) What latch projection will the ROFU 3460 accept?
Keeper depth allows up to 5/8 inch maximum latch projection with 1/8 inch door-to-frame clearance, and the 3/4 inch keeper opening starts at the center line. A 3/4 inch Pullman latch or deadlatch with more than 5/8 inch throw is outside that range, so on those you would move to a body built for deeper throws, like the HES Folger Adam 310-1(X), which covers 1/2, 5/8 and 3/4 inch throw latchbolts.
3) Is the ROFU 3460 handed, or can one unit cover both left and right doors?
Without a deadbolt cutout it is reversible and non-handed, so a single unit covers either hand. Handing only comes into play if you need the deadbolt cutout version, which is ordered as 1460B-LH or 1460B-RH with the voltage specified.
4) What voltage and finish options do I have to specify when ordering the ROFU 3460?
Two things get picked: voltage, either 12 VDC or 24 VDC, and finish, 605 bright brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, or 630 satin stainless steel. All three finishes come in both voltages. Unlike the field-selectable dual-voltage units such as the Hager 2930, voltage on the 3460 is fixed at order, so match it to the power supply you are running.
5) Will the ROFU 3460 fit an ANSI 4-7/8 by 1-1/4 inch jamb prep?
No. The 3460 faceplate is 1-3/8 by 9 inches, which is a taller and slightly wider cut than the standard ANSI 4-7/8 by 1-1/4 inch prep. For a drop-in to existing ANSI prep, the Dortronics 3300 Series uses a 4-7/8 by 1-1/4 inch ANSI strike plate, and the Von Duprin 4211 and Trine 4300CC bodies use that 4-7/8 by 1-1/4 inch faceplate as well.
6) Can I use the ROFU 3460 on a fire rated door?
Fail-safe strikes unlock on power loss, which is generally incompatible with a fire door assembly that must stay positively latched. For a fire rated opening, use a strike carrying a fire rating, such as the Von Duprin 6400 with a 3-hour UL 10C rating in fail-secure, the Hager 2930, or the Camden CX-ED1410/CX-ED1420 Grade 1 ANSI fire-rated strikes.
7) I need a fire rated electric strike instead of the ROFU 3460 - what should I use?
The ROFU 3460 is a fail safe strike, which holds the keeper released when power is lost, so it is not the choice for a labeled fire door. For a fire rated opening, the Von Duprin 4211 32D is a Grade 1 fire rated strike for cylindrical locks with 12/24 VDC field-selectable operation, the Hager 2930 is a fire rated Grade 1 strike for cylindrical and mortise locks with 12/24VDC dual voltage, and the Von Duprin 6400 32D is a Grade 1 modular strike for mortise or cylindrical locks carrying a 3-hour UL 10C rating in fail-secure. Those are all fail-secure or field-selectable, which is what a fire door requires.
8) The ROFU 3460 faceplate is too long for my aluminum jamb - what fits a standard ANSI cutout?
The ROFU 3460 uses a 1-3/8 inch by 9 inch faceplate, which suits a long jamb prep. For a short ANSI-style prep, the Adams Rite 7100 and 7160 use a 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch flat faceplate for aluminum jambs, the Adams Rite 7170 uses the same 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch plate for hollow metal and wood jambs, and the Dortronics 3300 comes with a strike plate for ANSI prep at 4-7/8 inch by 1-1/4 inch plus a latch bolt sensing switch.
9) My opening has a rim exit device, not a cylindrical latch - can I use the ROFU 3460?
The ROFU 3460 is built around a keeper that takes up to 5/8 inch latch projection with a 3/4 inch keeper opening, which suits latchbolt locks in a hollow metal, aluminum or wood frame. For exit devices, the SDC 30-4 Series is a rim mount strike for a 3/4 inch Pullman latchbolt in stainless steel, the Hager 2945 is a fire rated rim exit strike with field selectable fail safe/fail secure and a latchbolt monitor, and the HES Folger Adam 310-4-2 is a complete strike pac for surface vertical rods.
10) Which alternatives to the ROFU 3460 run on AC power?
The ROFU 3460 is offered in 12 VDC and 24 VDC. If your power supply is AC, the Trine 004 strike runs 8-16VAC, fail secure, with a 6-1/4 inch by 1-3/8 inch faceplate and up to 5/8 inch throw, and the Trine 4300CC runs 16-24VAC/DC, fail secure, with a 5-7/8 inch by 1-1/4 inch faceplate and up to 5/8 inch throw. Note both are fail secure rather than fail safe.
11) I need an electric strike that also works with a deadbolt. Does the 3460 do that?
The standard 3460 has no deadbolt cutout. For a deadbolt opening, specify 1460B-LH or 1460B-RH along with the voltage you need, and note that version is handed, so you have to determine the hand of the door before ordering.
12) Is there a lighter duty or simpler electric strike than the ROFU 3460?
The ROFU 3460 is a commercial strike with a stainless steel faceplate and 1700 lb holding force. If the opening is lighter use, the Trine 001 Series is a light commercial fail-secure strike with a 5-7/8 inch by 1-1/4 inch faceplate, the SDC 15 Series is a value strike for 5/8 inch latchbolt with 12/24 VDC operation, and the RCI 15BS is an economy fail-secure strike for special offset latch entry.
13) Will the ROFU 3460 work on a pair of doors with a deadbolt?
