1) Does the Sargent & Greenleaf 6731 come with a dial and ring, or just the lock body?
Part number 6731-004 is the lock body only, with a standard bolt and four wheels. No dial or ring is included. If you need the complete package, 6731-111 is the four-wheel version supplied with a D225 Spy-Proof, key locking black and white dial and ring.
2) Will the S&G 6731 drop into a safe door that already has an S&G mechanical lock?
The 6731 lock case uses S&G's "magic module" footprint, which is what makes it a straightforward retrofit on existing containers already prepped for that pattern. If the door was cut for a magic module lock, mounting holes and spindle location line up.
3) What is the difference between the S&G 6730 and the 6731?
Wheel count. The 6730-010 is a three-wheel lock body with a standard lock bolt; the 6731-004 is the four-wheel body, also with a standard bolt. Four wheels means a four-number combination instead of three, so more possible combinations for higher-security applications. Both are otherwise the same 6700 series design.
4) Is the S&G 6731 a UL Group 2 safe lock?
Yes. The 6700 series mechanical safe locks, which includes the 6731, are UL Group 2 rated. They were built for high-security, high-traffic use such as ATMs, gun safes and bank locks.
5) How much force will the 6731 lock bolt take?
The solid brass lock bolt resists 225 lbs of force. There is also a built-in relock trigger that fires if someone attempts to punch the dial or spindle, so the bolt stays captive under attack rather than being driven open.
6) Can a locksmith change the combination on the S&G 6731 without pulling the wheel pack apart?
The 6731 uses a key-changeable wheel design, so combination changes are done with a change key rather than by disassembly. Dialing stays the familiar left-right-left sequence and the lock is operable one-handed.

Three wheels (6730) is the usual choice for general commercial safes and gun safes where a three-number combination meets the requirement. Go to four wheels (6731) when you want a longer combination and a larger combination space, typically on ATM, bank and other high-value containers. Both are UL Group 2 and both use the standard bolt, so the decision is about combination length, not bolt strength or mounting.
9) What keeps the wheels on this safe lock from drifting out of adjustment over time?
S&G's patented torque adjuster lets you set the wheel pack to a specific resistance, which is what holds off wheel skating and vibration opening over a long service life.
