Sargent & Greenleaf Black and White Key Locking Dial Only

The non-key locking dials can be used with existing dial rings but the key locking convertible dials must be used with the new type dial rings. Key locking convertible dials can be either key removable locked and unlocked (standard). A key locking dial can be only staking a rivet supplied by Sargent & Greenleaf, inc. into the back of the dial. The overall diameter and height from the door surface are the same as current dials and ring sets. The attaching screw hole locations are also the same. Dials are equipped with single spline 5/16"" - 40 spindles. A spindle is pressed into a dial with its spline keyway aligned to either 41 or 50 on the dial, as indicated in the table. The #41 splining location is required to ensure full lock bolt extension when key-locking dials are locked down with zero under the opening index. Dial spindles will accommodate a maximum door thickness of 3.4 inches. Thicker doors require a special order dial. Dial rings are shipped with dial ring bearings and necessary mounting hardware for standard installation.

Note: Dials and rings must be ordered separately. "KL" indicates a key locking dial.

1) Can I put the S&G D690-007 key locking dial on my existing dial ring?
No. Key locking convertible dials like the D690-007 have to be used with the new type dial rings. Only the non-key locking dials (for example the D003-003 and D017-007 front reading dials) will go onto existing dial rings. So if you are converting an older safe to a key locking dial, plan on a new ring such as the R211-002 front reading dial ring at the same time.
2) Does a Sargent & Greenleaf dial come with the dial ring?
Dials and rings are ordered separately, so the D690-007 key locking dial arrives as the dial only. The ring is the part that ships with the dial ring bearing and the mounting hardware for a standard installation, so if you are replacing a complete dial and ring set you need both line items on the order.
3) What spindle does the S&G D690-007 dial use, and how thick a door will it handle?
The dial takes a single spline 5/16 inch - 40 spindle, pressed into the dial. Spindles accommodate a maximum door thickness of 3.4 inches; anything thicker than that needs a special order dial from Sargent & Greenleaf.
4) Why is the D690-007 splined at 41 instead of 50?
The 41 splining location is what ensures full lock bolt extension when a key locking dial is locked down with zero under the opening index. That is why the key locking D690-007 is splined to 41 while the non-key locking front reading dials, D003-003 and D017-007, are splined to 50. If you order a key locking dial splined to 50 the bolt will not throw fully in the locked down position.
5) Will a key locking dial fit the existing holes in my safe door?
Yes on the hole pattern. The overall diameter and the height above the door surface match current S&G dial and ring sets, and the attaching screw hole locations are the same. What changes with a key locking dial is the ring, which must be the new type.
6) What is the difference between a key locking dial and a standard S&G dial?
A key locking dial adds a key that holds the dial down, which prevents anyone from dialing the combination until the key releases it. Key locking convertible dials can be supplied key removable locked or key removable unlocked, unlocked being standard, and a dial can be made key locking only by staking a rivet supplied by Sargent & Greenleaf into the back of the dial. A standard front reading dial such as the D003-003 has no key and works on existing dial rings. On the part numbers, KL marks the key locking version.
7) Do I need to worry about handing when ordering this S&G safe dial?
No. The D Series key locking dial is non-handed, so the same part works regardless of which way the safe or vault door swings.
8) Is the S&G D690-007 dial mechanical or electronic, and what finish is it?
