Sargent & Greenleaf Black Dial 3.75in w/Large Knob

A spindle is pressed into a dial with its spline keyway aligned to either 41 or 50 on the dial, as indicated in the table. The #41 splining location is required to ensure full lock bolt extension when key-locking dials are locked down with zero under the opening index. Dial spindles will accommodate a maximum door thickness of 3.4 inches (86.5 mm). Thicker doors require a special order dial. Dial rings are shipped with dial ring bearings and necessary mounting hardware for standard installations.

1) Does the Sargent & Greenleaf D Series black dial come with the dial ring, or do I have to order that separately?
Separately. Dials and rings are ordered as two line items, so a black 3.75 inch dial with the large knob does not include a ring. When you do order the ring, it ships with dial ring bearings and the mounting hardware needed for a standard installation, so the ring side of the job is covered once you add it.
2) What is the thickest safe door a Sargent & Greenleaf D Series dial spindle will work on?
Standard dial spindles handle a door up to 3.4 inches (86.5 mm) thick. Anything thicker than that needs a special order dial with a longer spindle, so measure the door from the outside face to the back of the lock case before you commit to a stock dial.
3) What does the 41 versus 50 spline location mean on a Sargent & Greenleaf safe dial?
The spindle is pressed into the dial with its spline keyway lined up to either 41 or 50 on the dial face. That alignment sets where the dial sits relative to the lock's drive cam. The #41 location is the one required to get full lock bolt extension when a key locking dial is locked down with zero sitting under the opening index. Get the wrong splining and a key locking dial won't throw the bolt all the way.
4) Is this Sargent & Greenleaf dial a key locking dial?
No. In the S&G D Series numbering, a key locking dial is flagged with "KL" in the model designation. The black 3.75 inch dial with the large knob carries no KL flag, so it is a plain combination dial with no key lockdown feature. If you need the dial itself to be key-secured in the locked position, order a KL version instead.
5) Do I need a left-hand or right-hand version of this safe dial?
Neither. The D Series dial is non-handed, so the same part works regardless of which way the safe door swings. Handing is not a specification you have to sort out on this one.
6) Is this a mechanical safe dial or does it work with an electronic lock?
Mechanical only. This is a combination dial for a mechanical S&G safe lock, driven by a spindle pressed into the dial. It has no role in an electronic keypad system; an electronic lock body needs its own keypad, not a dial and ring.
