Sargent & Greenleaf Black Dial Ring 3.75in Diameter D3

The non-key locking dials can be used with existing dial rings but the key locking convertible dials must be used with the new type dial rings. Key locking convertible dials can be either key removable locked and unlocked (standard). A key locking dial can be only staking a rivet supplied by Sargent & Greenleaf, inc. into the back of the dial. The overall diameter and height from the door surface are the same as current dials and ring sets. The attaching screw hole locations are also the same. Dials are equipped with single spline 5/16"" - 40 spindles. A spindle is pressed into a dial with its spline keyway aligned to either 41 or 50 on the dial, as indicated in the table. The #41 splining location is required to ensure full lock bolt extension when key-locking dials are locked down with zero under the opening index. Dial spindles will accommodate a maximum door thickness of 3.4 inches. Thicker doors require a special order dial. Dial rings are shipped with dial ring bearings and necessary mounting hardware for standard installation.

Note: Dials and rings must be ordered separately. "KL" indicates a key locking dial.

1) Does the Sargent & Greenleaf R004-002 dial ring come with a dial, or do I have to order the dial separately?
The dial and the ring are separate orders. The R004-002 is the ring only. It ships with dial ring bearings and the mounting hardware needed for a standard installation, but you pick the dial on its own line, for example S&G D003-003 or D017-007 front reading dials, or the D690-007 key locking front reading dial.
2) Can I use a key locking S&G dial with an older existing dial ring?
No. Key locking convertible dials have to be used with the new type dial rings, which is what the R004-002 is. Non-key locking dials are the ones that can go onto an existing ring. If you are moving to a key locking dial such as the D690-007, plan on replacing the ring at the same time.
3) Will a new S&G dial and ring set line up with the screw holes from the old one?
Yes. The attaching screw hole locations are the same as the current dials and ring sets, and the overall diameter and the height off the door surface match as well. That makes it a drop-in swap on the safe or vault door face without redrilling.
4) How thick a safe door will an S&G dial spindle handle?
Dial spindles accommodate a maximum door thickness of 3.4 inches. Anything thicker needs a special order dial with a longer spindle, so measure the door before you order the dial that goes with the R004-002 ring.
5) What is the difference between splining at 41 and splining at 50 on an S&G dial?
It is where the spindle keyway lines up on the dial. Dials come with a single spline 5/16 inch - 40 spindle pressed in, aligned to either 41 or 50. The 41 location is required to get full lock bolt extension when a key locking dial is locked down with zero under the opening index. Standard non-key-locking dials like the D003-003 and D017-007 are splined at 50; the key locking D690-007 is splined at 41.
6) Which S&G dial ring do I order for a front reading dial?
Front reading dials pair with the R211-002 front reading ring. The R004-002 and R034-002 are the regular change rings. If the dial on the door is read from the front rather than at the top index, match the ring to it.
7) Do I need to worry about handing when ordering a Sargent & Greenleaf dial ring?
No. The R Series dial ring is non-handed, so the same part works regardless of which way the safe or vault door swings. What you do have to match is the dial style, front reading versus standard, and the spline location.
8) Can a key locking S&G dial be converted in the field?
Only one way. A dial is made key locking by staking a rivet, supplied by Sargent & Greenleaf, into the back of the dial. Key locking convertible dials can be either key removable locked or unlocked, with unlocked as the standard configuration.
