Sargent LSP-12-24 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Sargent LSP-12-24 power supply run both 12V and 24V locking hardware?
Output voltage on the LSP-12-24 is field-selectable: 12VDC at up to 6 amps, or 24VDC at up to 3 amps. You pick one setting for the whole unit, so every device fed from it has to run on the same voltage. Mixing 12V strikes and 24V electrified exit devices off one LSP-12-24 is not possible. Total current draw also has to stay inside the amperage for the voltage you select, so size your device load against 6A at 12V or 3A at 24V before you commit.
2) Will the Sargent LSP-12-24 replace an older Sargent 3520 or 3540 power supply?
Yes. The LSP-12-24 is stated as a direct replacement for the older Sargent 3520, 3521, 3540 and 3541 power supplies. That makes it the straight swap when one of those legacy units fails in an existing Sargent access control install, with the added benefit that one part number now covers both the 12V and 24V legacy units because output is selectable.
3) Does the Sargent LSP-12-24 power supply have a fire alarm input for releasing locks on alarm?
It does. The LSP-12-24 includes a built-in fire alarm interface, so the panel's alarm contact can drop power to the connected locking devices for egress on alarm. That is what lets it feed electrified exit device trim, electric strikes or mag locks on an opening where code requires release on fire alarm, without adding a separate relay module. The unit is UL Listed.
4) Does battery backup come with the Sargent LSP-12-24, or do I order the battery separately?
The LSP-12-24 has optional battery backup charging capability built in, but the battery itself is not included and is ordered separately. If the openings need to stay powered through an outage, budget for batteries sized to the voltage you select on the board.
5) How many electric strikes or electrified devices can one Sargent LSP-12-24 power?
Work it from the amperage, not the device count. The LSP-12-24 delivers 6 amps at 12VDC or 3 amps at 24VDC, so add up the inrush and holding current of every device on the circuit and keep the total under that figure for the voltage you select. Continuous-duty devices hold far less current than their inrush, so inrush is usually the limiting number on a multi-door install.
6) Is the Sargent LSP-12-24 power supply enclosed, and can it be locked in a public corridor?
The LSP-12-24 ships as a boxed steel power supply unit with a key lock on the enclosure, so the board and any backup batteries stay behind a locked steel cover. That suits mounting in an electrical room, closet or above a ceiling in a school, hospital or multi-family building where tampering is a concern.
7) Is the Sargent LSP-12-24 only for access control, or can it serve a fire alarm system too?
Both. It is a selectable-voltage power supply built for access control and fire alarm systems, with the alarm interface on board. Common use is powering electrified door hardware on a card-reader opening while taking a release signal from the fire alarm panel.
