Satco Lighting S11872 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Satco S11872 need a recessed can, or can it go straight into the ceiling?
It is a direct wire LED downlight with a remote driver, mounted recessed into the ceiling. The junction box wires directly and the slim housing drops into the opening, so no separate can housing is required. There is no screw base adapter here, the LED is integrated.
2) Can I use this Satco 15W baffle downlight in a shower or a covered exterior soffit?
The S11872 is IP65 rated and carries a Wet location rating, so a shower trim or covered soffit is within its rating. Satco classifies it as an indoor fixture, so keep it under cover rather than fully exposed.
3) What color temperatures can I set on the Satco S11872, and do I have to order them separately?
One part number covers all five. A CCT selector on the fixture sets 2700K, 3000K, 3500K, 4000K or 5000K, so you can stock a single SKU and match warm lobby lighting and 4000K back-of-house from the same box. Wattage is fixed at 15W, it is not wattage selectable.
4) Is the Satco S11872 dimmable, and what voltage does it run on?
Yes, it dims, and it runs on 120V at 60Hz single-voltage only. It will not work on a 277V circuit. Wiring and compatible dimming details are in the Satco installation instructions and spec sheet supplied with the fixture.
5) Does this Satco downlight meet California Title 24 for a residential or commercial retrofit?
Title 24 compliant, and listed cETLus. It is also FCC and RoHS compliant. For a California job that puts it in the eligible column for recessed downlight retrofits without a separate compliance workaround.
6) What does remote driver mean on the S11872 and does it change how I install it?
The driver sits in its own enclosure off the fixture instead of inside the trim, which is what allows the 1.25 inch body depth. You mount the driver box above the ceiling, accessible, and run the low profile head into the opening. Plan a little extra room in the plenum for the driver even though the fixture itself is shallow.
7) Will the Satco S11872 hold up in a rental unit or high-traffic corridor?
The body is aluminum with a white finish and the LED is rated for 50,000 average hours. For a property manager re-lamping a building, that puts replacement well past the usual turnover cycle, and the single white finish keeps a fleet of ceilings matching.
