Satco Lighting S11879 – Frequently Asked Questions

    1) What color temperatures can I set on the Satco S11879, and do I have to order a specific one?
One part number covers five color temperatures: 2700K, 3000K, 3500K, 4000K and 5000K, selected on the fixture itself. Nothing to specify when ordering, which is why property managers like these for mixed buildings - you can stock one box and match warm lobby lighting at 2700K and cooler back-of-house areas at 4000K from the same carton.
    2) Can I use the Satco S11879 downlight in a bathroom or covered exterior soffit?
Damp location rated, so it is suitable for bathrooms, covered porches and soffits where it sees humidity but not direct water. It is not wet-location rated, so do not use it anywhere exposed to direct rain or spray. It is also cETLus Listed and FCC compliant.
    3) Does the Satco S11879 downlight meet California Title 24?
Yes, the S11879 is listed as Title 24 compliant, which matters on California residential and multi-family work where recessed luminaires have to meet JA8-style requirements. It is also RoHS compliant for projects with material restrictions.
    4) Is the Satco S11879 dimmable, and does it work on my existing 120V dimmer circuit?
The 14W S11879 is dimmable and runs on 120 volts at 60Hz. It needs a dimmer rated for LED loads; standard incandescent-only dimmers are the usual cause of flicker or limited dimming range on low-wattage LED downlights. At 14 watts each, a lot of fixtures fit on one dimmer, but the dimmer's minimum load also has to be respected.
    5) Do I need to buy lamps for the Satco S11879, and what happens when the LED fails?
No lamps to buy. The LED is integrated, so there is no socket and no replaceable bulb; at end of life the whole fixture is swapped. Rated average life is 50,000 hours. For an MRO stockroom that means carrying the fixture itself as the spare, not a lamp SKU.
    6) What finish does the Satco S11879 come in, and is it metal or plastic?
White is the only finish offered on the S11879, and the housing is aluminum, which helps pull heat off the LED driver in an enclosed ceiling cavity. Round trim, 7.17 inches across.
    7) Is the Satco S11879 light weight enough to hang off the existing can without extra support?
The fixture weighs 1.35 lb, light enough that it carries on the retrofit connection to the can or on the mounting hardware without added bracing. Overall it is 1.88 inches high by 7.17 inches in diameter, so there is very little mass sitting above the ceiling line.
    8) Where can I get the spec sheet and install instructions for Satco S11879 before I submit it?
Satco publishes both for the S11879: a spec sheet at media.satco.com/specsheets/pdf/S11879.pdf and the installation instructions at assets.satco.com under the S11879 product folder. Those are what to attach for a submittal package or hand to the installing electrician.
