Satco Lighting S13155 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I just screw the Satco S13155 LED into my existing metal halide high bay, or does the ballast have to come out?
The ballast has to go. The S13155 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, which means it wires direct to line voltage at 120-277V. Leaving the old HID ballast in circuit will damage the lamp. The socket has to be rewired so line and neutral land on the socket contacts, and that is electrician work, not a lamp swap.
2) Can the S13155 be mounted base down or horizontally in a shoebox fixture?
No. Burning position is base up only. Mounting it base down or horizontal puts the heat sink in the wrong orientation and is outside the rated operating position, so for a base-down or horizontal fixture you need a lamp rated for universal burn position instead.
3) Is this Satco HID replacement lamp OK inside a closed acrylic or glass high bay fixture?
Yes, it is an enclosed rated lamp, so a sealed or gasketed fixture is acceptable. It is also damp location rated and listed for indoor or outdoor use, which covers canopies, loading docks, and covered parking as long as the fixture itself keeps water off it.
4) What HID wattage does this 152W Satco LED actually replace?
At 152 watts it puts out 25,000 lumens, and Satco rates it as a 1000W incandescent equivalent. In practice that is the replacement tier for 400W metal halide and 1000W incandescent high bays in warehouses, gyms, and shop buildings.
5) Does the S13155 qualify for utility rebates and California energy code?
It is DLC approved and Title 24 compliant, which is what most utility prescriptive rebate programs ask for on HID replacement lamps. It is also FCC compliant for emissions. Those three together are usually the documentation an institutional or MRO buyer needs for a retrofit submittal.
6) How much light spread do I get, and will it light the aisles or just the floor under it?
Beam spread is 180 degrees, so it throws a wide wash rather than a tight down beam. In an open high bay that covers aisles and racking faces reasonably well, but if your existing fixture relied on a reflector to narrow the distribution, expect a broader, flatter pattern after the swap.
7) What color temperature and color rendering does this Satco lamp produce, and is it switch selectable?
Fixed 5000K daylight with an 82 CRI. There is no CCT selectable switch on this lamp, so if you are matching warmer 4000K fixtures elsewhere in the building this one will read noticeably cooler and bluer.
8) What current draw should I figure per lamp when sizing the circuit for a high bay retrofit?
Draw runs 1.267A at the low end of the voltage range down to 0.549A at the high end, at 50/60Hz. On a 120V branch circuit figure roughly 1.27A per lamp; at 277V it is about 0.55A, which is why most multi-fixture retrofits land far fewer circuits than the old HID gear needed.
9) Will this lamp hold up in an old socket, and how is it built?
The S13155 uses an HB64 shaped body with a white housing, a plastic base and body, and a clear glass lens. It weighs 3.4 pounds, which is heavier than a typical screw-in lamp, so check that the socket and any lamp holder support are sound before hanging it in an aging fixture.
10) Is the S13155 dimmable, and how long does Satco rate it to last?
It is a dimmable lamp rated at 50,000 average hours. For a warehouse running two shifts that is on the order of a decade between relamps, which is the main reason facilities teams accept the rewire labor a Type B bypass lamp requires.
