Satco Lighting S16438 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Satco S16438 T8 LED tube work with my existing fluorescent ballast?
No. The S16438 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, which means the fluorescent ballast has to be removed or disconnected and line voltage wired directly to the sockets. If you leave the ballast in the circuit, the lamp will not operate correctly. If you want a lamp that runs on the existing ballast with no rewiring, you need a Type A plug-and-play tube instead.
2) How do I set the color temperature on the Satco S16438, and what are the choices?
It is a field selectable lamp with three settings: 4000K, 5000K and 6500K. You pick the color on the lamp before install, so one part number covers cool white through daylight. That is useful for MRO stock, since one lamp can be matched to whatever is already running in the building instead of carrying three SKUs. Output shifts slightly with the setting: 4200 lumens at one position, 4350 and 4150 at the others.
3) Does the Satco S16438 qualify for a utility rebate?
It is not DLC listed, so it will not qualify for the utility and energy-efficiency programs that require a DesignLights Consortium listing. It is Title 24 compliant and FCC compliant. If a rebate is part of your project budget, specify a DLC-listed T8 LED instead.
4) Can the S16438 run on 277 volt circuits in a commercial building?
Yes. The 30W Satco T8 LED is rated 120V to 277V at 50/60Hz, so the same lamp works on 120V residential or small commercial circuits and on 277V lighting branch circuits in industrial and institutional buildings. Current draw runs 0.250A down to 0.108A across that voltage range.
5) Is this Satco LED tube dimmable?
No. The S16438 is a non-dimmable lamp. On a dimmer or a 0-10V control it will flicker, buzz, or fail to start, and the dimmer may be damaged. For controlled spaces use switched or occupancy-sensor circuits only, or specify a dimmable T8 LED instead.
6) Can I use the S16438 in a parking garage or a damp area like a car wash bay?
The lamp carries a damp location rating and is listed for indoor use. That covers covered walkways, coolers, and similar areas with condensation, but not wet locations with direct water exposure or unprotected outdoor mounting. Burning position is universal, so it can go horizontal, vertical, or in a strip fixture without affecting rated life.
7) What will the light look like compared to the HO fluorescent tubes I am replacing?
Output is roughly 4150 to 4350 lumens depending on which color setting you choose, with an 83 CRI and a 360 degree beam spread, so light wraps around the tube the way a fluorescent does rather than throwing in one direction. The lens is frosted plastic, which diffuses the diodes instead of showing individual points. Satco rates it equivalent to a 125W incandescent.
