Satco Lighting S19947 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I need to remove the ballast to use the Satco S19947 T5 LED lamp?
No. The S19947 is a Type A lamp, which means it runs off the existing fluorescent ballast in the fixture. Ballast required. You drop it into the bi-pin sockets and leave the wiring alone, so there's no rewiring labor and no bypass. If the ballast fails later, the lamp fails with it, so a ballast-bypass (Type B) lamp is the choice when you want to eliminate the ballast for good.
2) Can I put this T5 LED tube in an enclosed fixture or a damp area like a covered walkway?
The S19947 is enclosed rated, so a sealed or lensed fixture is fine. It carries a damp location rating and is classed for indoor use, which covers places like shower rooms, covered exterior soffits, coolers and kitchens that stay out of direct water. Wet-location service, anything exposed to direct rain or hose-down, is outside its rating.
3) Will a 4000K T5 LED match the other fluorescent tubes in my building?
4000K is neutral white, the same nominal color as the common 4100K/4000K cool white fluorescent tubes used in offices, corridors and back-of-house. Color temperature is fixed, not field selectable, so if some of your openings are 3500K or 5000K you'll see the difference side by side. Color rendering is 82 CRI.
4) How much light and power am I getting compared to the 2-foot fluorescent I'm replacing?
11 watts producing 1400 lumens, rated equivalent to a 50W incandescent. Current draw is 0.092 to 0.040A across the voltage range, and it runs on 120V to 277V at 50/60Hz, so it works on both residential and commercial 277V lighting circuits.
5) Is the Satco S19947 dimmable on my existing fluorescent dimming system?
The lamp itself is listed as dimmable. Because it operates through the fixture's fluorescent ballast, dimming performance depends on that ballast and its control, not on the lamp alone. On a non-dimming ballast you'll get full output only.
6) Does it matter whether the fixture mounts the tube horizontally, vertically or upside down?
No. Burning position is universal, so the S19947 can be installed horizontally, vertically or base-up in undercabinet, cove, valance or display fixtures with no effect on rated life. Beam spread is 185 degrees, so light is thrown out and around rather than in a narrow band, which suits cove and shelf lighting.
7) How long does this T5 LED last, and is it a glass tube or plastic?
Rated average life is 50,000 hours. Construction is aluminum and glass with a glass lens, so handle it like a fluorescent tube rather than a shatter-resistant plastic LED tube. For food prep areas or gyms where breakage is the concern, a coated or plastic-bodied tube is the safer specification.
8) Can I sell or install the Satco S19947 in California?
Yes, it is marked lawful for sale in California, and the lamp is FCC compliant for electromagnetic emissions.
9) Is this T5 LED a three-way lamp?
No, the S19947 is a single-output lamp with no three-way switching. It has one fixed light level at 1400 lumens and one fixed color temperature of 4000K.
