Satco Lighting S39769 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Do I have to remove the existing ballast to install the Satco S39769 LED corncob lamp?
Yes. The S39769 is a Type B ballast bypass lamp, so the existing HID ballast has to be removed or bypassed and line voltage wired directly to the socket. It runs on 100-277V at 50/60Hz, so it works on 120V, 208V, 240V and 277V circuits without any driver or ballast in the loop. Leaving an old magnetic ballast in series will damage the lamp.
2) Will a Satco S39769 screw into my existing mogul socket on a wall pack or high bay?
It uses a Mogul Extended base, which is a mogul screw base on a lengthened neck. It threads into a standard mogul (E39) socket, but the extended neck means you need to check depth clearance inside the fixture before you close the lens. The lamp is a corncob shape and weighs 2.4 lb, so a heavy, loose, or horizontally mounted socket should be checked for support.
3) Can I put this LED corncob in an enclosed fixture with a glass lens?
Yes, it is an enclosed rated lamp, so a closed acorn, wall pack, or lensed high bay is acceptable. Many LED corncobs are not, which is why this matters. It is rated for damp locations and listed for indoor or outdoor use, so a covered exterior fixture is fine, but it is not a wet location lamp for direct exposure.
4) Does the Satco S39769 qualify for utility rebates or California Title 24 projects?
It is Title 24 compliant, so it can be specified on California work. It is not DLC listed, which matters because most utility prescriptive rebate programs require a DLC qualified product. If your rebate paperwork calls for a DLC listing, this lamp will not clear it.
5) What HID lamp does a 75W LED corncob at 10500 lumens actually replace?
At 75 watts drawing 10,500 lumens, the S39769 is sold as an HID replacement lamp and is rated at a 750W incandescent equivalent. The practical check is lumen-for-lumen against what is in the fixture now: if your existing metal halide or high pressure sodium lamp is putting out around 10,000 lumens of usable light, this is a like-for-like swap. Output is fixed 5000K daylight with 80 CRI, so expect a cooler, whiter light than high pressure sodium.
6) Can this corncob lamp be mounted base up in a high bay, or does it have to hang base down?
Either way. Burning position is base up or base down, so it works in a pendant high bay hanging base up and in a post top or acorn pointing base down. Combined with the three selectable beam angles, that covers most retrofit orientations without needing a different lamp per fixture type.
7) Is the Satco S39769 dimmable or color selectable?
No to both. It is a fixed 5000K lamp with no CCT selection and it is not dimmable, so do not install it on a dimmer, photocell-dimming control, or three-way socket. If you need a warmer color or step dimming on the same fixtures, you need a different lamp. On a plain line-voltage switch or an on/off photocell it is fine.
8) How much current does each lamp draw, for sizing a circuit on a parking lot or warehouse retrofit?
Draw runs 0.750A down to 0.271A across the 100-277V input range, the higher figure at the low end of the voltage window and the lower figure at 277V. At 277V you can put a lot more of these on a 20A branch than the old HID lamps they replace. Rated life is 50,000 hours.
9) What is the lamp body made of, and will the plastic lens yellow in an outdoor fixture?
The body combines aluminum and steel with a thermoplastic (PBT) housing, and the lens is clear PBT rather than glass. PBT is used here for the optic and the base material. The housing finish is white. For exterior work keep it in covered, damp rated locations as specified rather than in direct weather.
