Satco Lighting S9381 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Satco S9381 MR16 fit my existing low voltage track heads, or does it need line voltage?
Line voltage only. The S9381 is a 120V lamp with a GU10 twist-lock bi-pin base, so it goes into fixtures wired for 120V at 60Hz. It will not work in a 12V MR16 socket, which uses the two straight pins of a GU5.3 base and a transformer. If your heads are 12V, this is the wrong lamp.
2) Can I put this Satco GU10 LED in a sealed or enclosed recessed can?
Yes. The S9381 is an enclosed rated lamp, so a gasketed or fully closed fixture will not void it the way it would with a non-enclosed-rated LED. It is also damp location rated, which covers covered exterior soffits, bathrooms and similar, but it is classed as an indoor lamp, so keep it out of wet or direct weather exposure.
3) Will the 5000K color of this Satco MR16 match the warm white lamps already in my building?
No. At 5000K this is a daylight white lamp, cool and blue-toned next to the 2700K or 3000K lamps used in most residential and hospitality spaces. It will read obviously different in the same run of heads. Use it where you want crisp task or retail light, or relamp the whole zone so the color is consistent. CRI is 80, which is standard commercial color rendering rather than a high-CRI retail spec.
4) Is the Satco S9381 GU10 lamp dimmable?
Yes, it dims. It is a single fixed color temperature lamp at 5000K, with no CCT selection and no three-way function, so the only control you get is the dimmer. Pair it with an LED-rated dimmer; a legacy incandescent dimmer sized for a 35W halogen load often will not hold a smooth low end on a 4.5W lamp.
5) Is a 40 degree beam angle right for general recessed downlighting or is it too narrow?
Forty degrees is a flood beam, wide enough for general downlighting and wall washing on typical ceiling heights, not a tight accent spot. If you are trying to punch a hard pool of light onto artwork or merchandise from a high ceiling, you want a narrower spot beam instead. For even ceiling coverage in an office, corridor or kitchen, 40 degrees is the usual choice.
6) Can the Satco S9381 be installed pointing up, or only downward in a can?
Burning position is universal, so it can be aimed down in a recessed can, up in an uplight or cove, or horizontally in a track head or wall wash without affecting rated life. Rated average life is 25,000 hours, which is what makes it worth swapping halogen out in high-ceiling or hard-to-reach fixtures.
7) Does this Satco MR16 have an open LED array or a covered lens?
It is lensed, with an array white lens face and a white housing. The diffusing lens softens the individual diode images, so you are less likely to see hot spots or multi-shadowing than with a bare-array MR16, and the white body blends into white trims and track heads.
8) Is the Satco S9381 DLC listed for a utility rebate?
It is not DLC approved, so it will not qualify under programs that require a DesignLights Consortium listing. It is FCC compliant and, per Satco's California disclosure, lawful for sale in California, which matters if you are specifying for a CA jobsite.
