Satco Lighting S9384 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Satco S9384 MR16 lamp fit a GU10 socket, or do I need a pin-base fixture?
The S9384 uses a bi-pin GU10 twist-lock base and runs on 120V line voltage at 60Hz, so it drops into standard GU10 track heads and recessed trims with no transformer. If your fixture has a GU5.3 two-pin socket fed by a 12V magnetic or electronic transformer, this lamp will not work in it. GU10 and GU5.3 look similar but the GU10 pins are flared at the tips for the twist lock.
2) What incandescent MR16 does this 6.5W LED replace?
It replaces a 50W halogen MR16, putting out 500 lumens on 6.5 watts and drawing 0.054A. On a 15A, 120V circuit that is a large reduction in connected load compared with the halogens, which matters if you are relamping a whole ceiling grid of track heads and want to add fixtures to an existing circuit.
3) Can I use this LED MR16 in a sealed or enclosed fixture?
Yes, the S9384 is an enclosed rated lamp, so sealed recessed cans and closed decorative fixtures are acceptable. It is rated for damp locations and listed for indoor use, which covers a covered porch, bath, or cooler corridor but not direct weather exposure on an open exterior soffit.
4) Is the Satco S9384 dimmable, and does it work on my existing halogen dimmer?
The lamp is dimmable. Keep in mind the load: at 0.054A each, a run of these draws a fraction of what the 50W halogens did, and older magnetic or leading-edge dimmers have a minimum load that a small LED bank can fall under, which shows up as flicker or drop-out at the low end. For a full relamp of a dimmed circuit, an LED-rated dimmer is the fix.
5) Is a 40 degree beam right for general room lighting or for accent work?
Forty degrees is a flood beam, so it covers wall washing, general downlighting in a lobby or corridor, and retail shelf lighting where you want even coverage rather than a tight pool. If you are highlighting a single piece of art or a merchandise display and want a defined edge, you want a narrower spot beam instead, in the 15 to 25 degree range.
6) How long do these last before maintenance has to relamp again?
Rated average life is 25,000 hours. In a corridor or lobby burning roughly 12 hours a day, that is about 5.7 years before the scheduled relamp, which is the number to use when you are budgeting labor for lift work over a high ceiling.
7) Is this Satco MR16 a DLC listed lamp for a utility rebate?
The S9384 is not DLC approved, so it will not qualify under a rebate program that requires a DLC listing. It is FCC compliant. If the incentive application is driving the spec, check whether your utility accepts an ENERGY STAR or DLC listing before you commit the quantity.
8) Can I mount these base-up in a recessed can or do they have to point down?
Burning position is universal, so base-up in a recessed can, base-down in a pendant, or horizontal in a wall-mounted accent head are all fine. No orientation restriction to plan around when you lay out the heads.
9) Is this a clear halogen-look lamp or a lensed LED?
It is a lensed lamp with an array white lens face and a white housing, so you see a diffused white face rather than the faceted reflector and visible filament of a halogen MR16. If the fixture aims the lamp face toward the viewer and you want the look of the old halogen, that difference will be noticeable.
10) Can I use the Satco S9384 on a three-way fixture?
No. It is not a three-way lamp, so in a three-way socket it will run at a single output level rather than stepping. For step control, use a dimmer on the circuit, since this lamp is dimmable.
